A few months ago I was looking for information on Dark Age Welsh and asked for help on this excellent web page. GurKhan responded that there is very little out there and told me there were three issues of Slingshot that had a series of articles that somewhat covered the topic. He then apologized because the only way to get those issues was to order a back issue collection from the SOA for 40 pounds.

This is probably the silliest thing I've ever seen GurKhan post on this site. I ordered the back issues, ($64 US) and quickly received a thumb drive with 55 YEARS of back issues! That's right, I now have 333 issues of Slingshot going back to 1965 in PDF form to peruse at my leisure. I'm loving it. It would be cheap at twice the price.

I'm finding it very interesting reading the old articles and seeing how scholarship on various subjects has changed over the years. As an example; one early article states that the Macedonian pike required two men to hold it.

The only quibble I have is that I tried to order a second publication from the SOA and the shopping cart wouldn't allow me to put both items in it so I could only order the back issues. I'm probably going to get a subscription to Slingshot so I'll try and order the other item again.

If you have any interest in ancients wargaming and history, membership to the SOA is a must. Not only do you get an excellent journal 6 times a year but you also get discounts from a number of manufacturers.

I'm very glad that you found the Slingshot compilation good value, DnJ, and I really hope that you do go ahead and get a subscription. Justin is turning out some very high-quality Slingshots at the moment.

And once you have signed up, take up the invitation that you should receive to join us over the the Society of Ancients Forum soa.org.uk/sm/index.php for endless online chatter.
