I just recently got an Anycubic Photon during the Mother's day sale..

I'm new to painting 6mm but the print quality is totally satisfactory for me.

This model is a 1/200 model from M Bergman scaled to 1/285. I've found that I can also print his 1/100 models scaled down as well. If the Tiger in the background was in focus, you would be able to see the individual bolts on the road wheels.

Nice looking models with a decent paintjob. Looks like your new printer is working out quite well.

What does it cost per tank to print? The detail looks almost as good as GHQ but unless it's a considerable cost savings I'm going to stick to GHQ

Curious to see what 3d printed infantry look like in 6mm

Gauntlet17 Jun 2021 5:57 a.m. PST

If you don't consider the startup cost of the printer, it's vastly cheaper than GHQ. I think I got around 100 AFs from my first $17 USD bottle of resin. There is some variability depending on how much waste you have and how many failures while you are calibrating.

Really the largest expense is time, but since I enjoy it, that's not really an issue.

My printer is a photon, $150 USD on sale.

I'll try to get some pics of my infantry later.

Thank you Gauntlet.

I've been on the fence for a solid year. I'm a Middle Earth and Star Wars gamer and if I can justify using a resin printer for my 6mm WW2 gaming then I think it's time to get off the fence :)

Gauntlet17 Jun 2021 8:32 a.m. PST

I've been really happy with it.

The main reasons not to would be if you don't have time to tinker with it initially or you don't like working with chemicals. You do need to take some safety precautions.

gregmita217 Jun 2021 2:10 p.m. PST

If you dial in the right settings, even FDM printers can produce excellent results for vehicles. There's far less need for chemical and fume precautions with FDM printers.

Excuse my poor painting and camera work. Here are some infantry squads printed (with the base):

gregmita2,

I did print some vehicles on my FDM printer and they are OK. But the track area generally doesn't come out well and the layer lines are much more pronounced.

gregmita220 Jun 2021 4:14 p.m. PST

Yeah, they definitely won't look as good as resin prints, but as a "compromise" if for some reason resin is not an option, they are perfectly serviceable. Zinkala on this forum has quite a few photos of his work.

Gauntlet20 Jun 2021 6:36 p.m. PST

I do agree about that. Zinkala has done pretty well for himself.

I was perfectly happy with FDM for 10mm, even infantry.

The figures look good for 6mm. What was the source for the files?

Gauntlet21 Jun 2021 5:40 a.m. PST

Look up waynemc65 on thingiverse. He has free early war US, German, Brit, USSR, and Italians.

N Drury21 Jun 2021 7:54 a.m. PST

Thank you, I'll take a look. The only other files for 6mm figures I'd seen were on WargamesVault.

N Drury21 Jun 2021 7:58 a.m. PST

Found them. I see the files were originally 1:100, did you have any issues getting them to print at 6mm?

Gauntlet21 Jun 2021 10:21 a.m. PST

I didn't really have issues, I used meshmixer to put them on bases. A few figures need support (kneeling with rifle slung on back for example). Other than that a 15-20 degree tilt seemed to take care of firing weapons.

I printed mine at closer to 7mm than 6mm though since that's just how I like it.

N Drury21 Jun 2021 1:21 p.m. PST

Thank you.

There are non-toxic resins available but are more expensive. I am not sure if they are flexible or not. I am still considering getting into resin printing. I have been using an FDM printer for two years.

Zinkala15 Sep 2021 10:18 a.m. PST

Missed this thread somehow and I was even mentioned in it. Downloaded a bunch of waynemc65's infantry just now. They turned out real nice for you, Gauntlet.Haven't been working on WW2 for months but plan on doing soviets and early war germans sometime.

On the resin versus fdm question, yeah resin kicks butt for small details but newer fdm printers can do ok. They're getting cheap enough a person could have both. If the wife would allow me the extra space. Someday….
