Would you be willing to shake hands with fellow gamers at your next game or convention? Some say that 'shaking hands' will not be coming back after the pandemic.

* yes, I would shake hands
* no, I would not shake hands
* I never shake hands at games
* I'll be wearing gloves

ChrisBrantley10 Jun 2021 1:38 p.m. PST

I'm seeing lots of elbow and fist bumps these days

MajorB10 Jun 2021 1:46 p.m. PST

Yes, I would shake hands.

There is no evidence that the dreaded lurgy is transmitted by hand to hand contact.

martin goddard Sponsoring Member of TMP10 Jun 2021 1:47 p.m. PST

I will be shaking hands when the pandemic is a year or so gone. Or mostly gone.
martin

King Monkey10 Jun 2021 1:50 p.m. PST

yes, regularly shake hands now. The elbow and fist bumpin' is just silly.

dapeters10 Jun 2021 1:53 p.m. PST

I fine with it but I don't want to cause anyone grief over it.

79thPA Supporting Member of TMP10 Jun 2021 2:11 p.m. PST

Hand shake, fist bump, whatever.

KSmyth10 Jun 2021 2:18 p.m. PST

I'm willing to do whatever seems to be what is called for. Trying to prepare for a Labor Day convention and all the usual social norms feel a bit uncertain.

War Scorpio10 Jun 2021 2:21 p.m. PST

Yes I would shake hands, Come'on Man!

Stryderg10 Jun 2021 2:38 p.m. PST

We're shaking hands now.
It is interesting that the younger crowd seems to be uncertain about it. And yes, elbow bumps just feel silly.

myxemail10 Jun 2021 2:59 p.m. PST

Yes,shaking hands is ok

cavcrazy10 Jun 2021 3:27 p.m. PST

I'm a hand shaker.

Bashytubits10 Jun 2021 3:30 p.m. PST

Shaking hands is ok.

Personal logo Herkybird Supporting Member of TMP10 Jun 2021 3:37 p.m. PST

Yes, as part of the 'Had Covid' and double vaccinated crowd, I have already shaken hands, though outside, I still keep distance 'Pour encourager les autres'.

Wackmole910 Jun 2021 3:46 p.m. PST

yes I would and have.

Cardinal Ximenez10 Jun 2021 4:06 p.m. PST

Yes. I do it every day.

John the OFM10 Jun 2021 4:11 p.m. PST

Considering how Covid is flaring up AGAIN in various parts of the world, I'm dubious about there being conventions here in the near future.
Let's ask this question again in 2023.

rustymusket10 Jun 2021 4:19 p.m. PST

I tend to shake hands. Just keep your hands away from your face after shaking until you can wash properly. I know, easier said than done.

Frederick Supporting Member of TMP10 Jun 2021 4:34 p.m. PST

I will shake hands – just be sure to wash 'em before I eat!

huron725 Supporting Member of TMP10 Jun 2021 4:38 p.m. PST

Yes, no problem. Just like the flu just wash those hands.

ccmatty Supporting Member of TMP10 Jun 2021 5:53 p.m. PST

I've been shaking hands all along.

ZULUPAUL Supporting Member of TMP10 Jun 2021 6:00 p.m. PST

Yup shake hands now.

Doug MSC Supporting Member of TMP10 Jun 2021 6:02 p.m. PST

I shake hands and hug!!!

Personal logo Old Contemptible Supporting Member of TMP10 Jun 2021 8:39 p.m. PST

Yesterday I shook somebody's hand for the first time in nearly a year. Both of us were vaccinated. Look forward to shaking many more hands.

abelp0110 Jun 2021 8:52 p.m. PST

I'm vaccinated, I'm already shaking hands!

Raynman Supporting Member of TMP10 Jun 2021 9:13 p.m. PST

I, too, will shake hands and hug special friends! I have been shaking hands all along and see no reason to stop.

Dennis10 Jun 2021 9:24 p.m. PST

MajorB, is "lurgy" just a Goon Show thing or did they appropriate a common Brit term?

Uesugi Kenshin Supporting Member of TMP10 Jun 2021 9:56 p.m. PST

Yes, not a problem.

Cerdic10 Jun 2021 10:16 p.m. PST

Dennis – 'the lurgy' is common slang. Often used when you know someone is ill, but you don't know exactly what is wrong with them…"he's off work with the lurgy"…

Korvessa10 Jun 2021 10:37 p.m. PST

I heard on the radio recently that some conventions are planning on issuing different colored wristbands (colored strips on name tag might even be better) to indicate one's stance on things:
Green = I am OK with physical contact (hand shaking, hugs, etc.)
Yellow = limited contact (fist bumps, etc.)
Red = keep your social distance, don't offer to shake hands

Sounds like a good idea to me

Dn Jackson Supporting Member of TMP11 Jun 2021 1:15 a.m. PST

Never stopped shaking hands.

advocate Supporting Member of TMP11 Jun 2021 2:02 a.m. PST

Dennis, most British people will get a reference to the "dreaded lurgy", but I don't know it's origin.

advocate Supporting Member of TMP11 Jun 2021 2:02 a.m. PST

I'm not a big hand-shaker anyway.

Personal logo etotheipi Sponsoring Member of TMP11 Jun 2021 4:07 a.m. PST

No.

Vaccinated for months now. It's in the high 90%s that I am not going to get it. Probably had it in November '19 before it was a thing, anyway. So, even more unlikely.

There's tons of evidence COVID can be transmitted through skin to skin contact, just like most other diseases (some can't live on the skin long enough for that).

What there isn't, is tons of evidence about asymptomatic carrying, as it's extremely difficult to get data on. The other thing there isn't, is loads of vaccinated kids.

I'm not going to get it, but I'm not going to be some kid's Typhoid Mary.

johannes5511 Jun 2021 4:24 a.m. PST

No, it is proven that handshaking transmits and not only covid

All Sir Garnett11 Jun 2021 7:00 a.m. PST

Yes

rampantlion11 Jun 2021 7:14 a.m. PST

yep

Howler11 Jun 2021 9:34 a.m. PST

without hesitation

Tom D111 Jun 2021 10:06 a.m. PST

Yes. It's important to show I am not armed.

War Scorpio11 Jun 2021 10:36 a.m. PST

Very happy to see the results of this question. Overwhelming for the hand shake. Still have faith in humanity.

Gorgrat11 Jun 2021 11:57 a.m. PST

Life in a plastic bubble is life not worth living.

So I'd love to shake hands. Unless you're eating a pulled pork sandwich.

Dukewilliam11 Jun 2021 12:29 p.m. PST

You know what would be nice? A website where I come and read about my miniature Wargaming hobby without having to wade through all the purposely provocative posts and topics, designed so one side or the other can make snide and snarky remarks about the other side, that's what I would like. Can we just get a ‘Bleeped text stirrer' message board?

Personal logo etotheipi Sponsoring Member of TMP11 Jun 2021 3:03 p.m. PST

Yes. It's important to show I am not armed.

Why?

Life in a plastic bubble is life not worth living.

I'll be sure to pass that on the ICU and Isolation wards at the VA when I'm there.

I'm currently in a country where they bow instead of shaking hands. I'm sure they need to know, too.

War Scorpio11 Jun 2021 3:03 p.m. PST

Excuse me Sir Mr. Duke. Nope! This is a forum. Take it, the Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. There are plenty of just Wargaming queues on this site. Please…..

USAFpilot11 Jun 2021 3:21 p.m. PST

No change in my behavior. I've never been a big hand shaker. But if someone offers a handshake, I will reciprocate.

Personal logo Der Alte Fritz Sponsoring Member of TMP11 Jun 2021 4:02 p.m. PST

I don't see the point of shaking hands. Most of the time it is disingenuous. I mean are you really glad to see that person that you barely know?

COVID has also given me reason to avoid hugs with people I don't know.

ZULUPAUL Supporting Member of TMP11 Jun 2021 5:04 p.m. PST

The survival rate is still 98%, I know that is no comfort for those who died due to Covid but for me (I also think we had Covid in Nov 19) I feel the stats are in my favor. I'm in the age zone with concurrent health problems but still refuse vaccine on moral grounds. I also believe the statistics for Covid deaths over count the real cause of death which is in some cases the chronic problems that would have killed them with flu, pneumonia etc. BTW I worked ICU for 27+ years through several severe flu outbreaks & Ebola scare etc. This ends my comments on this subject.

JimSelzer11 Jun 2021 5:22 p.m. PST

never liked shaking hands before hope the custom goes away

I'm with you to be skeptical. I'm always skeptical about applying science to real life. Too few people (on either side of an issue) actually look critically at the science. Most look for a sentence or two that seems to say what they wanted to say before they looked, then stop.

That said, in aggregate, my SWAG is that we are undercounting. That is, like any case, we are overcounting in some categories and undercounting in others. One of the problems with the rapidness of the response (and the ridiculous expectation that the response was ssssslllllllooooooowwwwww) is you can't overcount future CVOID related deaths but you can undercount them.

If you look at the etiology and symptomology of COVID, it exerts markedly larger adverse pressures on the body than either influenza or pneumonia. Some people that died because of COVID pressure would have died from influenza or pneumonia pressure. For others, COVID pressure was critical and influenza or pneumonia would not have been. Since COVID pressure is higher, there are only minimal outlier cases where influenza or pneumonia would cause death and COVID would not.

never liked shaking hands before

Is that because I pick my nose? :)

Story Time: Back in the day when I wasn't so grey, and dinosaurs ruled the land, I went to a modeling and simulation conference (got an award for my paper … clay tablet, and everything).

I was bored after arrival the night before the conference, so I whipped up a simulation of the conference display floor. There were little simulated people running around. They had affinities for different displays and other things that drove their behaviour.

F'r'ex, some people went to lunch, others stayed out and manned the booths. People, met and talked. Different durations. And, of course, they shook hands.

Everyone, however, went to the restroom periodically. For the men, 10% didn't wash their hands and then went back out to meet and shake hands with others. Then those people shook hand with still others. And so on.

Of course, transfer lessened the more times you were removed from the male no-washy-handsy person. But it did accumulate if you, say, shook hands with two second-generation no-washy-handsiers.

It was a beautiful contract transfer epidemic.

The most important thing I learned was 9 of 10 men asked "Only 10%?" and 9 of 10 women asked "Really? As many as 1 in 10?"
