Today, Friday June 4, is "National Doughnut Day" established by act of Congress in 1938 to honor the Salvation Army's "Doughnut Lassies" for their work in supplying fresh-made doughnuts to the US troops in France during WW1.

In WW2 and later wars they were called the "Doughnut Dollies" and were provided by the American Red Cross.

There is a picture of one of the "Daniel Boone" clubmobiles debarking from a landing craft at Normandy. Just the additional support vehicle for your American forces!

So raise your doughnuts high today in their honor!

Donuts are one of my favorite food groups.

Oh sure, now you tell me, and I didn't get one today.

I do have a Persian cinnamon roll, but it's not the same.

Well, there's a coincidence.

Today is National Fish'n'Chips Day in Britain. We'll match your unhealthy food and raise you…

Well, I thought all these US National Days were just marketing tools to encourage sales for profit's sake.
I had pancakes today, not knowing. Oh well. Wait another year.

Just got back from the local Krispy Kreme. No profits for them today— the kids are out of school and every mom in the area has pulled up with a horde eager for doughnuts! laugh

I'm afraid I have been recognizing National Donut Day for several weeks lately. But now I feel better knowing about the "Donut Dollies"!

Oooo, we NEED and national fish and chips day too, especially if it is cod.

My grandfather was one of the "doughboys" of World war I. He brought back picture postcards, including this one showing the "Doughnut Lassies." They are wearing metal helmets for protection from shrapnel and carry a gas mask in a pouch in case their section of the front is gassed.

That's a helluva Salvation Army assignment.
