"Adidas sneakers were a mainstay in the Soviet Olympic team. Then, the shoes were sold under a completely different name. Later, however, they were seen being worn by the Spetsnaz in Afghanistan. Despite the Soviet Union's official disdain for all things Western, there was actually an active and close partnership between the USSR and the "amoral" West. This photo shows Russian border guards. For the Soviet Union it has nothing to do))) However, sneakers indeed were popular with soldiers of combat units in Afghanistan. But there was no need to bring them from the USSR – any products of Western companies could be bought from Afghan traders on the spot.
In fact, a lot of goods from Western brands were sold in the USSR, and some of them were produced under license. But we must admit that these goods were never in abundance and it was necessary to try to get them. However, many brands of the USSR as well enjoyed popularity in the West))) |

We had a lot of officers who went through Afghanistan when I was in the army. Indeed, they were saying that it was much easier to get clothes, footwear, electronics etc in Afghanistan than in the SU. Sneakers, bought on local markets were not only Adidas but anything with suitable quality to withstand harsh Afghanistan conditions. Japanese and Swiss quartz watches were also very popular. |
