My friend Bernie went missing on a 1970 bombing run in Vietnam. Every Memorial Day since has come as a reminder of the void he left in the lives of those he served with, his family and all who knew him… 2019 from Military: link |

Remember the survivors too, especially the ones that bear the "survivor's guilt" every day and night. Wolfhag |

He was one year younger than my two younger sons (twins, born one minute apart). He had a life never lived. Vietnam is now a welcoming tourist destination and the country is now almost politically seen as a counterpart to Chinese expansion in the South China Sea. Hindsight is a marvelous thing of course. The Domino theory may have not been that far wrong. Maybe you did need to draw Travis' Line in the Sand, from the Alamo. I strongly suspect LBJ was a really decent person, out of his depth in international diplomacy, however good his domestic record. But the price paid was by kids of this age. Not to mention the folks who came home maimed or messed up. I suspect it actually was "worth it", but I am so glad none of me or mine were called upon to make that sacrifice to decide that. |
