This is a nice little Trek ship model that could work for a large number of 28mm or 15mm milieu. And it is ripe for a little conversion project to light it up.

With this model, you could absolutely do that.

Since you are not going to glue the base to the upper hull (lots of space in there), I would recommend neodymium magnets to hold it closed. You would probably want to add a "handle point" – just a little bit sticking out – for leverage to open and close it.
