August II the Strong, King of Poland and Elector of Saxon, after several defeats from the Swedes, took measures to conclude a separate peace with Sweden. If he succeeded, then Russia would find itself face to face with its formidable Scandinavian adversary. Of course, this development of events did not suit Peter the Great.
