"As you know, Denmark withdrew from the war with Sweden in August 1700, and in November the Russian army suffered a crushing defeat in the battle of Narva. August II the Strong, King of Poland and Elector of Saxon, after several defeats from the Swedes, took measures to conclude a separate peace with Sweden. If he succeeded, then Russia would find itself face to face with its formidable Scandinavian adversary. Of course, this development of events did not suit Peter the Great. In order to keep the initiative in its hands and keep the only ally in the coalition, the Russian government agreed to conclude a number of treaties with Saxony, as a result of which, among other things, the Auxiliary Corps was created for joint military operations on the territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth…"
