I say Samwell Tarley. "I am a man of the Nights Watch. I have taken a vow. I must fight. It is what men do." Much like Eowyn in Lord of the Rings movie. You can see the sheer terror in her eyes when she defends her king from the Lord of the Nazgul. Yet… she must. None are the heroes of the epic. Yet, they do what needs to be done. |

Never watched/read game of thrones so no clue there. For LoTR it has to be Samwise Gamgee, for me, he is totally unequipped to be a hero yet goes into Mordor (and fights the biggest arsed spider you'll ever see) all through loyalty to a friend. |

GoT – Tormund. Willing to do the most heinous thing possible (trust the southlanders) for the good of the people. LoTR – Gollum. Fights the internal struggle among whom he was, is, and wants to be. Tragic hero, too 'cox he loses. |

GOT- The reader, for entering a book series that the author will likely never finish in his lifetime. LOTR- Peregrine Took/ Pippin- at Minis Tirith, he transformed from a young boy into a man and stood his ground as a true companion to Gandalf and the men of Gondor against the armies of Sauron. |

In GoT, the most heroic person was the viewer who had to suffer through the bad writing and rushed editing of the last two seasons. In the books, who knows? Especially since they are not finished. In LoTR, I'm a fan of Faramir. He fights on despite a horrible father, releases Frodo despite the consequences to himself, faces the enemy and is deeply wounded in defense of Minas Tirith, is nearly killed on the funeral pyre of Denethor, but eventually finds his true love Eowyn in the Houses of Healing. |

In LotR, it is Frodo that makes the classic Hero's Journey: The young hero, chosen by destiny, receives the Quest. He leaves the civilized lands/ lands of normality/ land of the living and ventures into the wilderness/ Faerie/ land of the dead. He receives aid (from the Old Man, from the Sorceress, from the Boon Companion) and faces perils (from the Beast, from the Traitor, from Temptation). He ultimately succeeds and brings back the Boon to his people, but at tremendous, ultimately unbearable cost (a mortal wound or otherwise being rendered unable to continue to live among the people as before). Certainly Tolkien consciously used the Odysseus/ Beowulf/ Galahad template for Frodo's arc, and not least because he would have seen it it the life experience of himself and his fellow infantry subalterns in the Great War. |

I'm a fan of Boromir. Full of himself as a great warrior, he tries to wrest the ring from Frodo, and finally recognizes he cannot wear it. He gives his life for Merry and Pippin. The scene in the film where he keeps getting stuck by arrows and keeps getting up again always chokes me up. |

I am with pzih43 That scene where he runs to the rescue of the hobbits gets me every time. Sean Bean made him come alive for me. |

Tyrion. Despised, hated, ridiculed, he still attempts to do the right thing. |

+1 to pzivh43. The last stand of Boromir wherein Peter Jackson came closest to how I imagined Boromir's demise when I first read Tolkien many (many) years ago. |

Éowyn. She may or may not be able to kill the Witch King of Angmar, leader of the Nazgûl, but flinches not from the battle: "But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Éowyn I am, Éomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him." |

Don't know about GoT For LoTR Eowyn and Boromir are great, but I am with Samwise – very ordinary bloke who soldiers on and on and on |

Many hero's in both. My favorite for each is: Faramir for LOTR, Tyrion for GoT (although more anti-hero most of the time). |

Within the space of 10 minutes, Tyrion strangled his ex-girlfriend and shot Dad sitting on the can. Well, his gf always annoyed me (she was much worse in the book), and frankly Dad deserved it. I think the negatives outweigh the positives here. |

The Dragons in GOT. Anyone crossed Dani they got flame broiled. Heroic, tough and outstanding barbecue, hard to top that. Treebeard the Ent, he took on a wizard and won. |

LoTR – Eowyn. Got a bit fed up with the Hobbits and other major characters after a while. GoT – The Wuluffs 'would have been'! Given their initial 'significance', I had hoped for much more in books and TV. Can see the 'difficulties' in TV, but rather think Martin didn't know what to do with them, after starting the arc, so'wrote them down' to go for his 'wide world' creation. TV Dragons def' contenders! lol. But for humans:'Spoilt for choice'… 'given' that characters were never meant to be completely 'good or bad'. My Fave arcs were Daenerys and Arya. But for 'consistent heroic', Sam, Hodor or Lyanna Mormont! lol. |

GOT no idea never read or watched. LoTR- There are so many especially the average Soldier who stood and waited for the overwhelming hordes. As for an individual I would add Gimli – he is grumpy but stoic and faithful – even to an Elf some super nice character development. Also Merry and Pippin convinced an entire army of trees to begin a critical diversionary attack. |
