Hi. I am trying to find out the size of Swiss and Irish mercenary regiments during the WSS. I know both of these nationalities had large battalions. But how many battalions did they have per regiment? Did the Irish have 1 battaion regiments, as the British did? Did the Swiss regiments have two battalions as in the SYW? Did the size of their units change depending on whom they were working for?

Not sure about the Swiss but I believe the Irish units often followed the organization of their employers. The Irish units in French service started out with 3-battalion regiments and I am pretty sure that the Irish units in Spanish service in the WSS had 2 battalions per regiment – although by the time of the SYW the French Irish Brigade were single-battalion regiments when the vast majority of French line infantry units had 2 or more battalions

I think the Swiss were 2 battalions. I will look at my information/OOBs and confirm later.

Swiss are 2 battalions, although it appears they only fielded one on occasion and where two were present they were not always in the same brigade.
