This should be the last query from me for a while; the last of the waifs and strays for Massena's Corps at Aspern-Essling is the 3rd Baden Infantry Regiment. I've done a search and I see that people make Wurtemburg infantry. Looking at the Old Glory range link I might have to give the officer in helmet a bicorne (I'm not sure I'd have to) but if that's the worst I have to do it shouldn't be a problem. Is there something I'm missing at 15mm scale that means I shouldn't use Wurtemburg figures for the 3rd Baden Regt?

Cheers,
John

Stonewall Miniatures sell Baden troops in helmets, under the Capitan range (under French Allies).

I bought some a year or so ago. I was not too impressed with the quality. They were thinking of redoing the molds, I hope they have.

I bought a pack of each of what was available at the show, my thoughts are below:

AN19 – Fusilier – could be better, mold lines, takes time to get them to stand up.
AN20 – Grenadier/Voltigeur (in helmet) – 2 variants, 1 just about acceptable, other has bad mold problems.
AN22 – Command – s/bearer very good, standing officer ok, walking officer mold slippage, drummer very poor with mold slippage.
AN21 – Grenadier (in bearskin) – I have not seen this.

I decided not to buy any more until the mold has been redone. I will keep looking at them at the shows, whenever they start up again.

Alternatively, you could ask Stonewall if they have re-molded them.

Redcurrant,

Is Stonewall even allowed to legally sell Capitan figures? I thought that there was a legal case to where the original sculptor won against a re-caster?

That is a good point. I remember reading some of the dispute here on TMP. The original sculptor did win control of his sculpts. I believe that was Xan. However, the figures are still available on the Stonewall website.

If I found the right site they list them but with no photos so no knowing if they're new versions or not. Assuming they aren't, or that they're being pirated, I wouldn't want to get them, which brings me back to the original question:

Would Wurttemburg figures do the trick? They look to me to have the same cut of cloth, plume and comb arrangement etc but I might be missing something glaringly obvious.

Cheers,
John

John, there are pictures of the Baden infantry on the Stonewall website.

John,

I did my Baden contingent for the 1809 Campaign back in the 90's. I used Old Glory 15/18mm figures and they still look fine 25 years later. Only thing I changed was to replace the Old Glory horses, that are pathetic frankly, with AB horses. Made the world of difference to the look.

nsolomon99:
Did you use the Wurttemburgers?

Redcurrant:
Oops, I looked up Stone Mountain Miniatures . . .
Mustn't count on my memory :-/

John

Well done for your persistence John. This thread must have been like pulling teeth.

Ha ha! It was a bit strange. Usually there's someone ready with tons of information when a question like that gets posed. The poor old Badeners just mustn't inspire the same interest as most troops.

Now I just have to figure out exactly what colours they need. I'm happy that the blue coats of the French, Baden and Hessen-Darmstadt infantry will be similar (the Baden cavalry are a much lighter blue). But I've seen multiple versions of facing colours. I have plenty of time though as, just as I forced myself to paint over a hundred "German" Austrian infantry before I allowed myself to paint anything else, I'm going to paint plenty of French Ligne and a few legers before I start on the Confederation troops. I haven't bought any of these yet, only the French. And I just realised that the Baden and Hessian contingents supplied artillery also . . .

All fun and games,
John

I love the Badeners myself! :-) The best source is the Rawkins e-book, unfortunately unavailable at present due to his recent death. Lots of Baden material on my blog:

Thanks Peter,
I had seen two of your pages on the Badeners (by going to your 'uniform links' section but I didn't realise there were all the others as well, which aren't linked there. Your site is an absolute goldmine of information.

I get a bit confused because Gill refers to the IR3 as Graf Hochberg but the tables on your site give it as von Harrant in 1808 (G. Hochberg from 1810, and with a change of facing colours (deep red to Scarlet) and buttons (white to yellow).

I'm slowly getting a picture forming and your site has been a useful resource.

Has there been any news on availability of the Rawkins works? They seem a great resource.

Cheers,
John

There's at least a partial explanation for the confusion about IR 3 and 4; The army of 1809 was assembled rather hastily, with the Regiments being enlarged and absorbing men from the Garrison regiments as well as the introduction of conscription. To make things more confusing, one regiment was sent to Spain, but was composed of 2 battalions, each from a different parent regiment (#'s 3 and 4) and thus each with a different facing color but nominally (? re-) numbered as #4.

Erzherzog Johann08 May 2021 8:31 p.m. PST

So the regiment of two battalions that Gill gives in the Aspern-Essling order of battle as IR 3 Graf Hochberg is what exactly?

My thinking is maybe the name change had already occurred some time between the two tables (1808 & 1810), so in time for the 1809 campaign, but probably uniform changes reflect a later step. So in 1809 it may still have the old facing colours but the new name. Plausible?

Cheers,
John

That regiment probably had the same- one battalion in the originally designated facing color of IR #3, and the other in that of IR #4!

Redcurrant09 Jul 2026 1:48 a.m. PST

Baden infantry and Hussars are now available from AB miniatures (Eureka). They are looking very good, my order is in.

Can the artillary from the Bavarians be used as the Baden group.

Erzherzog Johann09 Jul 2026 2:49 a.m. PST

I don't think the Bavarian helmet is correct. Others will know better.

Cheers,
John
