Just wondering how realistic it is to have all my WSS infantry units fighting battles with bayonets fixed. I'm all for leaving them on but I do wonder if units uniformly went into battle like that. Cheers!

They were plug bayonets, so if they were on the musket, then you couldn't fire the musket. |

I like pre Seven Years War figures without bayonets – it somehow captures the period for me. |

The socket bayonet was used in the Spanish succession. It was introduced late 1690's. Most everyone used them by 1703. |

By the end of war, I guess few plug bayonets were still used, if any at all. |

I've read that a bayonet charge, although not unheard of, wasn't likely. I've also read that some socket bayonets weren't well-crafted and were prone to falling off the muzzle. I would expect that if enemy cavalry were lurking about, then the order would be given to "fix bayonets", since at that time the bayonets presumed main purpose was to repel cavalry. Cheers!

Just an update: I just noticed Ebor 28mm Miniatures for WSS, Dixon 15mm and Scale Creep 15mm WSS are manufactured without fixed bayonets. Cheers!

It was a time of continuous change, both in uniform and in equipment. Regiments were being equipped as soon as the colonels received the new material. It would not be surprising to see in an army regiments with plug bayonets and others with bucket bayonets. In the final phase of the war, plug bayonets fell into disuse. |

@Gallocelt Well documented use of bayonet charge by Catinat's French infantry at Marsaglia in 1693, 10 years before WSS. |

And the Swedes certainly used the bayonet while charging following the battalion's second volley, holding the musket in the left hand and drawn sword in the right. |

Hi dbf1676, Did the Swedes fix bayonets after the second volley or did they volley fire with bayonets already fixed? Cheers!
