I'm getting ready to start my Welsh project and I'm looking for illustrations of Welsh/British from 500 to about 1100 AD. I realize this is a large period and covers Welsh, Strathclyde, Dumnonia, etc. I'm hoping for original illustrations from manuscripts, Bibles, etc. but realize they're few and far between, (it was the Dark Ages after all).

I'm hoping for clothing colors, shield designs, (if any), hair colors, etc.

Thanks

There was a three-part series "The Appearance of the Medieval Welsh" by Paul Walsh in Slingshot issues 146-8. From memory the author found very little artistic evidence but quite a few useful literary references.

That's something! Thanks very much. Do you know if these issues are archived on the web anywhere?

Not that I am aware of; and it's too old for the back issues to be individually available. If you don't know anyone who has the back issues, the only source I know of would be buying the digital collection of "Fifty-Five Years of Slingshot, 1965-2020" on USB – link – which is not cheap. Sorry.

That looks like a good price to me. I'll give it a shot, thanks.
