hi all, I'm looking for suggestions and bright ideas on what to use to scratch build a bull ring, and in particular this old one from Tijuana, circa 1910. it is made up of rings of seats, with supporting posts around the outside. I have wood for the posts, but am a little stumped at what to use for the concentric circles. My scale is 1/72, and my budget small. If anyone has a real photo or better image that'd be appreciated too. I know there have been more famous bull rings in the town, but I'm looking for the original one.
link Thanks! |

Even at 1/72. its gonna be big! When I do stands/bleachers, etc., I figure out the radius of curve and draw concentric arcs on a piece of thin card. You can rough it up a bit by turning the arcs into series of line segments. Then just cut them out and draw the plank separations and wood grain (or metal texture). This is easy, the continuous pieces gives some solidity to the structure and the bits fit. The underneath supports are less important WRT detail, since they are hidden. You can just just cut solid staggered stair steps for the radii, or you can cut out open spaces to make it look like scaffolding. Either way, it is stronger and more stable being of one piece than constructing the whole thing. |

Thanks etotheipi, thats a great idea. Regarding the size, really good point. I should have specified that this is a gaming piece and not an accurate diorama I'm going for, so I expect to make it substantially smaller than the scale I'm using for the game. much appreciated. |

YW! I'd love to see pics … WIP or finished. I haven't made bleachers for myself. I've done a lot of commissions for Blood Bowl-type stands/bleachers. And a few other miscellanea. I would definitely not sweat detail on the supports then. All anyone is going to see is from the top down. BWT. I love the ref pic. I've never been to a corrida in Mexico. The ones I have been to in Spain were much more modern. It' hits that late 1800's to early 1900's TotC vibe that I really enjoy. I should probably follow through with my post-apocalyptic corrida – no Thunder Dome, no giant shoulder pads. |

If you have serious budget constraints just go with cardboard. I would wrap things with paper towels soaked with PVA (Elmers) glue. When that dries it is quite strong and can be dry brushed for great textures. |

Actually went to the TJ Corrida with my parents in the 50's. Don't disremember that much about it, though. |
