… Crossing 'Red Line' "Amid growing tensions between the United States and Russia, China threw its support behind Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling the two nations "comprehensive strategic partners of coordination in the new era." In a recent state of the union address, Putin reminded Western leaders of the country's nuclear arsenal and warned the West not to cross a "red line." Any country that provoked threats to Russia's fundamental security would "regret their deeds more than they have regretted anything in a long time," according to Putin…" Main page link Armand |

There is a saying that "violence is the last resort of the incompetent." I wonder if there isn't a case to be made that "a nuclear power's resort to nuclear threats is the last resort of a nation that has run out of other avenues to influence the global chessboard." |

That little alliance will end up just like the German/Soviet one in WWII. I hope to be around to see who will prevail. |

I say more posturing & saber rattling for local consumption … Highly doubt anyone, at least of the Big 3 Nuke Nations, will be tossing around Nukes anytime soon … It just is not profitable … |

Yea, apparently they forget we have nukes too, and the most powerful military on the planet. The will to use the latter is in question though, which gives the advantage to our enemies, e.g. Putin, Xi, and others. |

Thresher01, I would very much like to get acquainted with the Soviet-German military alliance treaty. Where and when was it concluded and published? Your nuclear forces don't matter. Russia is not going to win a nuclear war – it intends to take the United States with in the case of an American attack))) These are two big differences |

Russia is not going to win a nuclear war – it intends to take the United States with in the case of an American attack))) Very true … the only "winner" of a Nuclear exchange, will probably be the PRC/CCP. They are 20% of the world's population. They will have many more survivors than the US & Russia. And they know it … Albeit depending how many nukes were tossed around, many in China and in near by areas. Will die of the many effects later. E.g. fallout, Rad poisoning, etc., etc., … As well the few survivors in North America, Russia, etc., etc. Radiation does not play favorites … It pretty much kills everyone most living organisms, etc., etc. Good news is, no concerns about global warming, the cartels/drugs, terrorism, etc., etc. Most everyone will probably be dead or dying. There is always a silver lining … ⛅ |

I suspect that is highly unlikely, Cuprum2, though many norms are being broken on a regular basis, today. I doubt this one will happen though. If we'd wanted to do that, we would have done it decades ago, shortly after WWII ended, through the early 1960s when we still maintained overwhelming nuclear dominance. |
| Cuprum2 | 02 May 2021 8:21 p.m. PST |
Nuclear dominance does not mean an unequivocal victory. You attack the cities of the USSR – the army of the USSR captures Europe. Are you going to bomb Europe with nuclear bombs? Moreover, then China was an unequivocal ally of the USSR. Huge human resources … In my opinion, the outcome of such a collision is by no means unambiguous. I think the overwhelming majority of people understand that a war with the use of nuclear weapons is the end of the current human civilization. So I would like to hope that it will never come to its real use. But having a significant power advantage over your opponent / competitor / enemy gives rise to a great temptation to take advantage of this advantage))) So Putin is just saying that you should not rely on a military solution to disagreements with Russia))) This can be fraught with unpleasant consequences not only for Russia))) I don't see any other meaning in Putin's words. As for the Russian union with China, what else remains for Russia? China is a bad friend, but better than none. |

We forget that WW2 was fought without using chemical weapons. Ownership of a weapon doesn't mean it will be used (in fact weapons far often go unused eg expensive warships which sit out wars in ports or expensive airforces in lower power wars). Indeed since 1970s both USSR and USA rearmed for conventional warfare. The assumption on both sides was they could duke it out with conventional forces without necessarily resorting to nukes. Same applies today. No point investing in F-35s or S400s or other high end equipment or whatever if conventional warfare is well and truly extinct. |

Yes, MAD just a concept … I don't think either planned on using it. We all like to live, we are not jihadis … |
