What is the best proxy for Bavarian Raupenhel infantry?

I'm using Commission Figurines MDF semi flats. They are approx 1:200 scale

I'm thinking Austrian in helmets are the closest.

I am NOT going to get traditional figures for this, I've already got upward of 1000 French foot, plus skirmish, cavalry, cannon and officers! Same again for the Austrians. I'm going for the "after dinner on the Billiard table" look.
(Less beer and pretzels, more Brandy and cigars).

For about £30.00 GBP I can have the entire Bavarian corps for BP. I already have Brunswick.

At 6mm Austrians in helmets would be the best – and again at 6mm who will notice the difference?

@frederick

at 6mm who will notice the difference?

All – in the collective.

Looking through brandy goggles and cigar smoke, +1 Frederick!

Mood lighting may be of benefit also.

Austrians in Helmet. You could probably use these for Wurttemberg as well (Different blue)

I am toying with Württemberg and Westphalia next. Probably will only do enough for Blucher rather than FoGN and BP. With Poles will definitely only do Blucher, as cutting 1.5mm squares to convert shakos to czapkas is a pain.

After that, looking to do Russia. 50 quid gets me 150 bases worth

Do you paint them, or use a marker, or what?

Last Hussar29 Apr 2021 4:57 p.m. PST

Yes!

I've used various methods. I spray undercoat white, then use a variety of artists pens and paint pens.

Tonight I experimented with a 1 inch brush! It was for Austrian Landwehr, painting all grey. I think I'll undercoat next time for that, as the MDF got a bit hairy, and coverage was a bit tricky. Part of the reason to experiment t this new approach on militia, I can explain away scruffy

I don't undercoat the cavalry, just use paint pens on the cloth and rider, the burnt MDF has a lovely chestnut colour with a sheen I couldn't reproduce.

The 1 inch brush for main colour is defiantly worth refining (but with a undercoat). I painted 386 men (48 strips) grey tonight. Because they are flat painting faces is easy, and boots is using a black pen to draw a line.

I finish them off by using a fine rotring pen to mark out the scores between the legs, the waist and arms/body.
