Hey everyone! So I got all these Dark Ages miniatures all painted up but no go to rule set to play with them (Vikings, Saxons, and Normans). And while I like Skirmish games I'm looking at 'mass battle' again and the next cool ruleset. In the past I've liked games of Hail Caesar and Sword and Spear. But both also have aspects that are not my favorite. Does anyone care to share their thoughts on MEG? The game looks interesting but kinda has a hefty buy in needing cards and special dice. Thanks in advance! -Stew |

I enjoy MeG a lot. The 'Buy in' isn't as bad in comparison to some other rules because all the lists are free on line (ie no need to buy extra books). I have played quite a few different sets of mass battle ancients rules but I think MeG is easily the most entertaining to play. Martin |

MeG is my favourite Ancients to Late Medieval rules. I am just a humble player and so glad to have found these rules a few years ago. The cards and dice are a once-off purchase, the 350+ army lists are free. Once you nail down the card and dice system, you will wonder why you didn't start playing MeG earlier. You can play tournament-style games, pick-up games (points) and historical games. I have only played pick-up games and historical games. These rules have enough subtle variety that they just work for all my ancient armies through to Wars of the Roses. They are the best rules I have used for my WotR army. The mass battle effect, for me, is the ideal mix of large armies in playable units and manoeuvre on the table. Alternate activation makes this more fun as a game and adds an extra layer of decision making. The mechanics are clean and just makes sense in the context of the game and historical outcomes. These rules handle skirmishing "just right", in my opinion. Break out your TuGs and SuGs! |

MeG has the great advantage in that you can play it in three different scales. Pacto – with probably around 30 bases in each army. The smallest version. Magna – great for 25/28 mm figures on a 6ftx4ft (1800mmx1200mm) table Maximus – the big version for 15mm figures on a 6ftx4ft table or those big 25/28mm games on an 8ftx5ft table. The rules are on the more complex side, but once you understand the basic concepts are easy to pick up, but difficult to master. The army lists are free to download, over 625 different lists. I would also recommend joining the MeG forum, plenty of friendly and helpful advice. Richard |

I took a long look at MEG but then I went with ADLG. It has the advantage in that you can play in 4 different variations in any scale you want: 120 point – closer to DBA 200 point – 3 commands, this is the classic competition format, brilliant tactical challenge with how to task the three commands on a 120x80 table 300/325 – 4 commands, great for doubles games 400 point – monster games on a 6x4 table in 15mm The rules to start with are familiar to anyone who has played any of the DB-related games. The army lists are free and in the back of the rule book. There are 27 new army lists on V4, released this week, with a bunch of changes based on a few years of users/competitions globally. Version 4 was released this week. The French have started to receive their copies and the rest of us are excitedly tracking shipments across Europe waiting! More on Madaxeman.com (battle reports and podcasts) and on the FB group link (though you should wait until Monday when the social boycott is over ;) ) artdelaguerre.fr |

Fair question, Mortem et Gloriam is a set of ancient and medieval rules written by Simon Hall and available from Plastic Soldier Company. mortem-et-gloriam.co.uk for more information. |

I'm having difficulty finding out the figure scale for the game. How many historical hoplites would my 30mmX60mm stand represent? |

"I'm having difficulty finding out the figure scale for the game. How many historical hoplites would my 30mmX60mm stand represent?" Meg is a multi scale system each scale has a set base width from which all measurement's (movement range)are taken rather than inches Your stand of hoplites represent different amount's depending on the size of the game, So in pacto the miniaturized style of the game you're stand would represent half a tactical unit group. In magna the mid-size style of the game your stand would represent one quarter of a tactical unit group. In maximus the big style of the game your stand would represent one sixth of a tactical unit group.
So you can play the same battle representing the same forces in 3 sizes. |

thoughts on MEG? I have never played a ancient's/medieval mass battle game the only set of rules I've looked at was warhammer historical but never played. MEG Seems to be an ingenious game with lots of cool ideas however I found that the rules are badly written I found my self shouting at the book "stop bleeping selling the rules to me I've already bought the bleeping book". So some play testing was in order I picked up some pacto box sets late romans and goths my first impression was what no base's then I looked at the miniatures. Now theirs nothing wrong with the sculpts its this rubbish new resin that many company's seem inchanted by,if your happy to spray them one colour and leave it at that then these are the figs for you;I tryed to paint them but its like polishing a diamond out of a bleep. Needless to say I still haven't played an ancient's mass battle game. |

We use MEG for our Dark age games, 10000 points per side which is about 300-350 figures per army, so fairly small armies, but we do that in 28mm so 9x6 table is needed. Just doing a Classical Greek army figures from link (yes mine) so a traditional 6x4 will be fine for them, Hoplites cost a bit more than your average Saxon Churl. Anyway highly recommend rules, they do take a bit of understanding, but well worth the effort, and big following on facebook who are quick to answer questions. |

She is a plain girl and her father Peter and her brother Chris pick on her endlessly and Lois her mother basically ignores her. She has a talking dog in her house. Sorry could not resist MEG is a decent set of rules sort of improved Field of Glory with addition of cards (functionally like DBx Pips) and 'better' grading of troop types. Like FOG it sorts troops by both function and weaponry/protection level. It has several differing 'traits' for troops such as Shove or Shatter. It uses a unique set of dice (reminiscent of those in Command & Colours games). I find it more complex/involved than Art De La Guerre but then its meant to be and similarly geared primarily toward competition style games (as are most Ancients rules). Lots of online support |
