I want to paint up some German cavalry to add to my Caesarian Romans (write jokes here). As far as I know the Germans thought that saddles were less than manly. So if I paint German cavalry they would be riding on saddle cloths, but there would not be any girth strap, breast strap or any other harness, just some sort of reins and bridle. Am I correct in these assumptions? Thanks |

I don't think there are any representations of non-auxiliary German cavalry. Roman art typically portrays "barbarians" as either naked or as prisoners and prisoners don't ride horses. Greeks don't seem to have used saddles either but they sometimes used saddle cloths or animal skins. |

A long ride would be most painful I think? Especially with no stirrups. Ouch! Lots of friction and compression problems. martin |

Have a look at the study at link : figure 171 and colour plate H are reconstructions of early German cavalry which may help. |
