If so can you explain to me (because I can't get my head around them) the mechanics of the patrol and screening rules/tables. Thanks in anticipation.

I've not used the system though I did acquire a copy many years ago; since no one has yet replied, I'll give you my impression. For screening, total the values of the defending force using the "Troop Values" table (these are designed for use with "Empire" rules, so may need to be modified if you use another set of rules for tactical engagements). Tabulate the value of the "patroling" or probing force using the same table. Determine the odds for the "Screening Chart" table and roll percentile dice. Reference the resulting letter code on the "Results" table and apply to the involved units. At least that's how I interpret the system. Hope this helps a little.
