"The United States has ordered its non-essential staff in Chad to leave the African country as rebel fighters approached the capital on Sunday after early election results showed President Idriss Deby on course to extend his three-decade rule…."

Fascinating.

I wonder if the French will intervene as Chad is a key French ally and provides a large pool of combat troops for French led operations and the French had already intervened there many times including as late as 2019 when French air force bombed rebels.

I would go as far to say that French intervention is the reason behind a lot of Chad's and other African countries instability issues.

At least, without the French we would have seen many more crooks in colorfull fantasy uniforms running that shithole and not just Idriss Déby.
Who knows what his nephews would have made out of it, had they succeded in their attempted Coup d'état in the mid to late 2000s?
It would have remained at least in possession of the family, wouldn't it?
But then again, would Khartoum have approved?
And who would be in possession of the oil production licenses today, Exxon-Mobil, Royal Dutch Shell?
Who knows, who cares?

Is there an Osprey 'African Tribal-Dictator-Clowns 1950-1990'?
Ah, Bokassa, Idi Amin.

Did you know that Mary Hopkins song is said to be played on the Christmas eve executions in the Malabo stadium, Equatorial Guinea in '69 by Nguemas Minions?
He obviously possessed some humor.

Chad like many states in that region are failed or failing in many cases. That makes them "easy pickings" for jihadis/terrorists, etc. But again, seems the West can't do a lot to help them in many cases. Like A'stan … they really are "unfixable" by Western standards.

But yet the West/Europe, etc., has been sending aid in all forms, $, NGOs, etc. for decades. I even remember seeing those commercials as a child, 50 years ago. It appears much of that money, aid, etc., is wasted and in large amounts …

I always liked that song …

The French wholly known that mess. Let them handle it.

Grrr… "wholly OWN".
Damn autocorrect.

France never wanted to help these countries. They wanted to maintain a de facto empire.

Don;t worry ,the ever capable Chadian army ambushed and killed 300 of the Rebels, but they are not Jihadists as we know them, just a rival party.

Arjuna20 Apr 2021 12:02 a.m. PST

So, it's just family dispute like every Friday?

Yep … pretty much … 😁

Well it just got more 'interesting'. Either the late president was unlucky, wrong place wrong time, or the rebels got lucky, but the cynic in me thinks that the truth is probably a lot murkier. One assumes that the dissident former-officers may not be entirely without sympathisers inside Chad.

So, okay it's Tuesday, but Chad is still family property, isn't it?

Most murdered knew their murderers beforehand and the homicide rate in families is much higher than in the population as a whole.
That is a well known criminological fact.

Putting on my Columbo raincoat and adressing all of Idriss Déby's sons.

evil grin

I had the exact same thoughts – though I wouldn't entirely rule out a 'hostile take-over' of the family firm!

As for Chadian military in the 80's they were a force to be reckoned with, at least in African terms, and gave Gaddafi's Libya and its proxies a kicking. Something Deby's was partly responsible for.

Remember in the movie, "Blood Diamonds" … "TIA!"

"This Is Africa!"

Some things never change …

Seems the French decided he wasn't worth it after all.
