I'm still in the process of trying out my new extension tubes as a way to improve my shots of miniatures. In the meantime, I'm sharing my opinions on the stuff I've used in the past and am using now. I hope that you'll find something interesting or useful in this set of mini-reviews.

50mm 1.4 and Kenko extension tubes is what I use. Works Great.

Some comments for you

- extension tubes don't alter the focal length, they allow closer minimum focusing distance. This may not be what you want – it gives you a very specific perspective
- lighting is 10x more important than camera gear. Quantity, direction, colour temperature and quality (cri for bulbs)
- modern gear is much more flexible than "the old days" High ISO (800+) and 24 MPix sensor allow flexibility in lighting setup and cropping. For reference, I use a Rebel T6s
- phones are potentially better than SLR because of inherent high depth of field. I have found with my Pixel is that it tries too hard to optimize the image and messes up mini photos unless there are only a couple in the image. I should download a non-optimizing app, but haven't got around to it
- photo apps are very very useful. Try GIMP for something free. Cropping, lighting adjustment (levels or curves)

Kenko extension tubes are what I'm trying out. So far, so good!

Thanks for the correction – I'm just looking to get the lens closer to the miniatures I'm shooting.
I'll give GIMP a try!
