I was thinking of making some markers to show artillery firing and other markers to show where the the projectile hits.

I'm thinking that for wars like Spanish Succession and earlier (ECW, TYW, etc.) round solid shot prevailed at longer ranges. I would then represent the cannon firing as grey-white smoke (with yellow-orange muzzle flash), and the projectile hitting the ground as mostly dirt flying, and therefore grey-brown billowing dust. Any thoughts on this?

Interesting idea to mark the impact – might be useful for reactions.

Dress it up a little with some unfortunate soldiers or horses in the billowing dust cloud?

… don't Irregular Miniatures make something like this in metal?

Hi Stoppage,

I hadn't thought of that, showing a casualty in the impact cloud. I might try it!

Mostly I'm just attempting to suggest where the cannon shot might have struck based on casualties. Trying to give it more of a feeling of a battlefield. Could be useful in sieges as well.

Could put up pictures but for firing since I do large battles solo and sometimes is days of play for 1 round use cotton ball smoke markers for who has fired in that round.
I have made cannonball stacks as markers for which batteries are heavy artillery so I can tell between units on the far side of the table out of a pile of ceramic balls, if you can think of using them could send you some in a envelope.

Figures are 18mm artillery driver and closer to 15mm drummer

Hi 14Bore,

Those turned out good. I'm pretty sure I can get ceramic balls at Michael's but thanks anyway for the offer. Clever idea!

Right now I'm not even sure which rules I'll use but leaning towards "Beneath the Lily Banners" or the free rules I got "Close Fire & European Order." I assume I will need markers, (like "disordered", etc.) I will make the markers myself and I will do my best to design them so they will blend in with the battlefield and be compatible with the period.

Was pondering what I would do if I wanted to mark artillery in round shot era. As round shot just plows ground maybe a ball on a paper marker brown with darker streak, or use glue or spackle to put a edge around the ball.
Don't always but have causality markers that I hand painted figures on I drop every time a company stand is gone.

Yeah, a marker like that sounds good for your purposes, 14Bore. You could go simple or elaborate, depending to how important the marker is to your game.

Cheers!
