For a fleet vs fleet game: 1: Can be played to completion in under three hours 2: Has technological specialisms that vary between powers to keep things interesting and a bit different 3: Can be made visually appealing with miniatures 4: Has tactical decision points that keep things fresh and interesting – even exciting 5: Has quite detailed ship displays/mechanisms And yes, I know that points 1 and 5 are often mutually exclusive…! |

For a fleet vs fleet table top game: 1) allocating power between propulsion, shields, and weapons 2) some sort of momentum effects for movement 3) each race having some unique abilities or disabilities 4) basic rules allow each player to control several ships and complete a multi player game in under three hours 5) being able to use any ship models from any manufacturer |

1) Allow players to command multiple ships 2) Allow two reasonably sized fleets to complete a game in 2-3 hours. 3) Each race has unique abilities and flaws. 4) Players should be able to design their own units quickly and fairly simply. 5) The games should be fun and allow for the unexpected. |

Why, GOBS!, of course! thegobspage.com 1. Allows multiple players to command multiple ships (and I do mean multiple). 2. Plays quickly. 3. Fits lots of different SF tropes and settings, and can mingle the same. 4. Allows variety in ship class, armament, and defenses. 5. Easy to track ship damage/condition. 6. Doesn't take itself too seriously. (Yeah, that's not in the Top 5, but it certainly fits GOBS!). |

A very minor point but I enjoy a game that allows you to track missile or torpedo movement around the board. |

1. Gothic cathedrals in space. Oh…wait… |

Good question. I'll have to think a bit. I so much want to enjoy space combat miniatures games, but they all seem to fall flat somewhere. |

Apart from the things you'd want from any game – reasonable playign time, rules that are simple without being simplistic, etc – I want some nod to inertia and lack of friction. If a space game plays just like a naval or aerial one, I'd rather play a naval or aerial one. |
