I keep wanting to like this series, I've heard so much about it. Three episodes into the first season, and I'm bored.

Gear Pilot13 Apr 2021 2:46 p.m. PST

To each their own. Amos is my favorite character. I admire his problem solving skills.

nnascati Supporting Member of TMP13 Apr 2021 3:22 p.m. PST

Tell me why I should stick with it.

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP13 Apr 2021 3:32 p.m. PST

Because it gets better. Like many series. It takes a bit to get going. But it's your choice to watch or not.

Thanks

John

Give it 2 more episodes. I kept starting and stopping but it did get better. And there are clues that turn up again cleverly.

Col Durnford13 Apr 2021 4:04 p.m. PST

Stick with it. I've watched it from beginning to now and it is worth the ride. It's already on the watch it again just to see what I missed. Side note, I recently called my doctor's office and I swear a belter answered the phone.

DisasterWargamer Supporting Member of TMP13 Apr 2021 4:24 p.m. PST

Ive enjoyed the show – the belters are out there Col Durnford

nnascati Supporting Member of TMP13 Apr 2021 4:27 p.m. PST

Okay, thanks all. I will stick with it.

Nick--pick a character and try to guess what will happen.

USAFpilot13 Apr 2021 5:04 p.m. PST

I watched a couple seasons but just didn't get into it. Each to their own I guess.

Schogun13 Apr 2021 5:11 p.m. PST

My wife and I are binge watching. We're on Season 4. Keep with it, Nick.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP13 Apr 2021 5:47 p.m. PST

I read the first book. Decent story, but by the end most of the people I found interesting were dead. Picked up the second book and found it was still focused on the same really annoying character, and put it back on the shelves.

Frederick Supporting Member of TMP13 Apr 2021 6:06 p.m. PST

I found that series better than the book – it does grow on you and there is great character development – I am torn between Amos and Alex as my favourite characters

repaint13 Apr 2021 6:31 p.m. PST

Yes, the show gets so much better as you go. The 5th season was pretty intense. Really enjoyed it (and usually, I have little patience as to how I give my time)

Oberlindes Sol LIC Supporting Member of TMP13 Apr 2021 6:52 p.m. PST

I really enjoyed Season 1 from the beginning. When it ended, I felt like that had been a complete story, and I wasn't craving more.

Funny, I feel the same way about Dune. I never read any of the sequels.

Tgerritsen Supporting Member of TMP13 Apr 2021 7:25 p.m. PST

The first few episodes are a very slow build. I love The Expanse but can see you getting uneasy in the first season. Stick with it as the payoff is there by the end of the season.

redmist112213 Apr 2021 8:46 p.m. PST

For me I had no idea what was going on in first few episodes, then I went back to watch again and was able to follow. Knowing who's who in the show helps a bunch, and really get better as it goes through the seasons. Hoping it will continue. Great series.

IMHO it's probably the best science fiction TV show for many years, ice watched each series at least twice.

+1 David

brandlmr13 Apr 2021 11:17 p.m. PST

Best science fiction show on the tube in a long time. The first successful hard SF show (sorry, still can't say scifi with a straight face).

I started reading the books long before the show came out. Best hard space opera in a long time. And the authors are involved in the show.

Huscarle13 Apr 2021 11:35 p.m. PST

+2 David, I've just started watching series 5. After that finishes, I think I will rewatch the entire series grin

My favourite character is the belter Camina Drummer.

martin goddard Sponsoring Member of TMP13 Apr 2021 11:41 p.m. PST

I very much enjoyed it.
It does have to include a lot of plot parts in order to attract a wide as possible audience I suppose?
We live in a time of huge choice of TV, so you can leave Expanse alone and still have many other choices.
I haven't bothered with Game of Thrones or Harry Potter and feel none the poorer.

To my humble opinion, it's the best SF series ever watched (at least, among those I've watched in 50 years or so).

nnascati Supporting Member of TMP14 Apr 2021 4:48 a.m. PST

Thanks folks. All those positive comments are what made me watch in the first place. I'll stick with it f9r a while longer.

The space combat alone sets it head and shoulders above most SF TV.

David Manley14 Apr 2021 9:29 a.m. PST

What really impresses me, apart from the story, the characters and the almost hard SF aspects, is the attention to detail. Thats why you really need to watch each episode more than once, for example freeze frame and go and look at the computer displays, things on their cellphones etc. and you see al sorts of cool stuff that doesn't need to be there (you could miss it and the story isn't affected) but just shows how cool the design team were when they put them together. Occasionally there is a small detail that is "blink and you'll miss something" – a thing that if you spot it will give you a great insight into what is going to happen (maybe). Series 5 had several of those in its space combat and tactical displays (not that I'm going to say what – spoilers if you haven't seen the show). So stick with it Nick, I'm pretty certain you will come away impressed.

I've really enjoyed it and as others have said, hang in and it gets better as it goes along.

mghFond14 Apr 2021 10:35 a.m. PST

Never liked Star Trek, was very much a Firefly fan but once I started with Expanse, wow. It is now my favorite SF show ever and I've watched all 5 seasons twice.
The second time to show my best friend the series as he doesnt get Amazon Prime. He loved it also.

My favorites are Amos and Camina Drummer!

Irish Marine14 Apr 2021 10:49 a.m. PST

How are the books? I imagine they hold more than the tv series.

Eclectic Wave14 Apr 2021 1:16 p.m. PST

The Expanse series started as a proposal for a MMRPG computer game.

DOUGKL14 Apr 2021 5:19 p.m. PST

It does start slowly but once it gets moving it is quite a ride. Loved Miller, after that Amos has moved up. There is more there than just a stone cold killer.

Random Die Roll Supporting Member of TMP15 Apr 2021 6:08 a.m. PST

Season 1 is a slow start, and has a slight Detective Noir going on. Please hang on until mid 2nd season and you will get a good feel for how the series is headed.

ScottWashburn Sponsoring Member of TMP15 Apr 2021 8:19 a.m. PST

Read the first book and found it dreadful. I keep hearing that the TV series is better, but I haven't given it a try yet.

Augustus15 Apr 2021 6:29 p.m. PST

This most recent season was a total loss compared to other seasons. They were stretching for material and most of the best characters were dead. It started out slow, hit a really solid core, then fell apart with this last season.

Archon6415 Apr 2021 10:26 p.m. PST

Best scifi on TV. Stick with it. Probably the series that handles gravity and velocity/inertia best and also 3D combat between space ships.

It starts off as another CSI series; missing girl and world weary cop but develops into sooooo much more.

ROUWetPatchBehindTheSofa16 Apr 2021 8:14 a.m. PST

I actually liked the tone of the first series, but it does move on from that. I don't know if was deliberate? Definitely some of the best sci-fi fiction on TV and reasonably 'hard' with it, relative for most TV and movie sci-fi.

I had fancied reading the books.

Shagnasty Supporting Member of TMP16 Apr 2021 8:49 a.m. PST

I have greatly enjoyed both books and TV although I haven't seen the series since it went "streaming." Bobby was my favorite character through season 4.

gregmita217 Apr 2021 1:18 p.m. PST

@nnascati
The first season was based very closely on the first book of the series, which was written as a detective noir story. Each book of the series, at least initially was written as a different genre. e.g. the second one was more of a political thriller.
I guess my point is that the series will get more exciting later on, without revealing too much, and will likely switch to a genre you like.
