Had a laugh when I saw this nickname today, but I can see why it got it. I was unaware of that back in the day when this was under discussion for production, and before/when it was cancelled. Here's a link to info on the A-12 bomber: link Seems like perhaps it should be resurrected, or something very like it should be built, given its excellent design, and our need for longer legs for our carrier strike aircraft. Of course, I imagine perhaps the USN has moved on and are looking at things like the X-47B drone, and others instead, though enemy hacking and jamming ARE still major concerns, and probably getting worse and not better, so perhaps having a man in the cockpit IS still preferable. |
