It is finally here… 3d Printing, in 10 Million Colors. Not a joke. No idea on pricing, but it exists, and the pricing will decrease, over time. Cheers!

This has been slowly moving towards us for years. Nothing I want to tinker with yet, but within a couple years…

Some serious questions are being asked right now….

It's the same process as HeroForge uses for full color printing, because Shapeways is HeroForge's printer! Expect very high prices for the next few years, until the technology improves.

I am an army painter: GEtGW at arm's length, or three feet, is just fine with me! These are GEtGW. I would paint on some Minwax Polyshades Royal Walnut (aka, The Dip), base them, and done!

Good thing for me that my armies are pretty much bulked out, or I would be in serious trouble with this development… Cheers!

I don't see any figures on Shapeways actually available in this material yet, so hard to know what the price would be.

HeroForge offer 'Color Plastic Minis' starting at $44.99 USD USD – not to be mixed up with the Kickstarter exclusive 'Painted Plastic' at $149.99 USD USD

I've not tried it as they have a note that makes me worry about the details on these figures:

Note that our design tools render at a much higher detail level than can be captured on 30mm scale model, so some fine details like a character's eyes or iris may be indistinct in the final print.

Strange (not) that this note is only on this type of print as the other materials we have from them are fine in the eyes.

Color 3D printers have been around for over a decade (when I lived in Boston I went and visited a company that was selling them and that was back in 2009- they were wonderful even then)- but they are not cheap to buy or operate. They are definitely improving, but don't expect anything cheap soon.

I bought one fig from HeroForge in full color, just to see how it turned out. It's pretty good, although the colors aren't as vivid as hand-painted figs. I'm going to slap a clear-coat on it that I think should help the colors pop out. I'll post a pic when I get the chance.

Might even look good. The printer they use comes around 200k, so not quite yet in the affordable range for home usage.

Those printers who are use mixing, pigmentation or change of filament, and all fail at the one or other problem. I tried for my Balkenheim project, as painting buildings is kind of tiring after the first couple of hundred.
