You know whom I'm talking about— that actress who over-emotes so much she's got to be on a hidden hydration IV to recover all those lost, fake tears. Or, maybe it's the opposite— she treats a tragic scene like a phone call to a delicatessen, and romance like she's looking at a mediocre meal. But there she is, her name in lights, leadin-lady, top-billing, head on the poster, cover of People, over and over and over. Bleh. (Yes, this is the companion to the Worst A-list Actor poll.) Nominations open (for the record, my wife chose most of these): Jennifer Aniston Halle Berry Nicole Kidman Brie Larson Melissa McCarthy Demi Moore Meryl Streep (my wife can't stand her, Oscars or not) Hilary Swank Charlize Theron Reese Witherspoon Renee Zellweger For the record, I do not argue with my wife on things like this. Time to add your own! |

I can't believe your wife has never seen a Julia Roberts movie. |

It's a hard choice, especially tossing in Julie Roberts. Need to think on it. |

I'm going with Julia Roberts. |

Would not include Halle Berry. Does not take herself that seriously. How many of that lot would turn up to accept a Razzie? |

Where did you get your list, or your definition of "A-list" actresses? Melissa McCarthy??? |

"Melissa McCarthy???" Money arrives in shipping containers. |

Yea, I wouldn't put Melissa on an "A-list" actress list. Not sure Reese belongs their either, and some of the others I don't really know – recognize the names (have heard them before), but not sure they are "A-list" either. |

Same comment as on the other thread, Reese Witherspoon, Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman can at least act (and do it very well well), even if you don't like them for other reasons. Strangely my wife also hates Meryl Streep, I've no idea why as she can't explain it in rational terms. |

I've always subscribed to the view that there are film STARS and film actors/actresses. The former are themselves in every film that they are in and the latter play different characters … often with different voices/accents. |

Parzival; Meryl Streep? Really? Might as well throw Helen Mirren and Dame Judy Dench on the pyre while she's at it. Renee Zellweger in Cold Mountain was wonderful. As a general rule, Leading Women have it much harder in the industry than their male counterparts. My wife and daughter are both actors and my wife is also an acting and voice teacher/coach. From her perspective, it's about how much the actor researches the character and what choices they make. The Director may negate that choice, because it doesn't jibe with their "vision" of the character, and I think that's where you see some poor choices by actors who are otherwise quite good. Some actors do better in different mediums. Stage, small screen, and big screen really are very different. My wife is flipping amazing on stage, but she really doesn't like doing theatre. She would rather be on the small screen. Just my opinion. YMMV. Eric |

"Kristen Stewart" Try Camp X-Ray and Welcome to the Rileys. Not sure she's A-list, but those two small films show her in a much better light. |

Zellweger was my choice, by the way. I did so because while I generally like her performances, she has a tendency to fall into repeated shtick— the wrinkle-nosed pout is a constant goto for her which she overdoes. By the way, for the record, I actually do have a background as an actor and theater director, both in college and in real life, so I greatly appreciate the skill and work that goes into acting. I suppose at some point I recognize that all actors and actresses can wind up outside their best roles— and it's light fun to poke at that from time to time. Name an actress (or an actor) and one can find a role in which they were an over-the-top turkey in need of a good basting. |

Perhaps there might be a smidgen of relevance when a Wargame category is added to the Oscars. |

C'mon guys, you don't realise how well off you are… think about The Fall of the Roman Empire or El Cid, both truly epic films except for those scenes with Sophia Loren who brings all the action to a shuddering halt with her OTT pouting that passes for acting. |

I thought that "10" was a hilarious Dudley Moore/Blake Edwards comedy, except when Bo Derek showed up. Gorgeous of course, but she derailed the comedy. I went to see it for the cheesecake, of course, but ended up grumbling every time she showed up. But that was many years ago. Bo is now famous for still being hot in her 60s, but I honestly can't remember having seen her in a movie in years. |

John, she did a number of low budget flics, nothing of any real quality, most only used her if they needed someone who looked good in a bikini, aside from Sean Connery in Zardoz. |
