I remember playing a set of moden rules that the was playably from 1950 to 2000 (maybe). Or at least 1950 to xx was in the title. I played these in the late 70s early 80's.

Does this ring a bell for any one.

Probably WRG rules. IIRC it was 1950-1975 then 1950-1985 then 1950-2000.

Wargames Research Group. We used to play big WWIII battles when I was just a sprout. They were fun, but most anything was back then, they seemed to work fine, but I wasn't in charge of the games so there might have been some modificatioins to the rules of which I wasn't aware.

Could also be:
Challenger II: Ultra Modern (miniature) wargames rules
For battle group level games 1950-1995

The also published two Modern Equipment Handbooks for it, a Modern Aircraft Handbook, and several digests of army lists.

both are interesting sets of rules. WRG 1950-1985 is the set I have. The rules are simple enough to be playable and complex enough to involve a lot of strategy. There are a few warts and rough patches but for microarmor games there aren't too many rules out today that could compete.

Does the WRG 1950 – 1985 have a pull out section of charts in the middle?

Also, has any one seen this rules set for sale recently, ok in the last couple years.

Sounds like WRG rules … 1950 – 1985…

Challenger , challenger 2 and challenger 2000 all followed it and were a more realistic improvement (Tabletop games)

All these games had pull out qr charts (and in the latter cases bombardment templates and markers)

No idea who sells them online but there is a small shop in York that had a couple of copies of each a while back.

Firefight:Modern Skirmish Rules was written by Bruce Rea-Taylor and published by Table Top Games in 1985. It was and still is a superb skirmish system.

WRG1950-1975. First good modern set I used. These, and the WRG1925-1950 WW2 set both used fire and move opposing side turn sequence (you fire before you move, with distance moved and accuracy affected by your movement). Armor was from F to AA.

WRG1950-1985. Best general set of the 3. Changed the armor from letters to numbers going from I to XII. Add "s" and "S" for special armor. Included new weapon systems. Turn sequence was changed from pure alternate fire and move to Movement types A-F, with E (load and unload while moving) to F (full move) going first. A was shoot stationary with mostly missiles, B fire stationary with cannon. C fire stationary, then move. D was firing on the move,and you could shoot at any point in your move. Observation was done at the point you chose to shoot. Opportunity Fire was also available. Good artillery rules as well.

Version 3 1950-2000. I never quite managed to grasp the movement/troop type integrated rules nor the artillery process, so we used Version 2 sighting, movement, and artillery request with the rest of the 1950-2000 rules. On the other hand, this set had excellent penetration tables and a simplified direct fire system. Weapons vs. armor class had either K (Kill) – (No Effect) 4 (4+ to kill all ranges) or 1200 which meant chance to kill 700m or less was 2+, from 701-1200m was 4+, and from 1201 to 1700 meters 6 all on a D6. Same system in their latest WW2 rules (including the morale/training/movement integrated not too well explained system). A Sherman 75mm L41 APCBC shell vs. Class 4 armor (Mark IV/H or SGIII/G frontal armor, and the Sherman's as well was Class 4) was 100. Chance to KO from 0 to 100m was 4+, from 101 to 600 it was 6.

Recommend you get the 2nd Modern set and the 3rd WW2 set, then use the movement system in the 2nd Modern set in both sets of rules. This is a very tactical game using single vehicles, and infantry teams. A Current USA squad would be 2xSAW-R-MAW Teams. (Squad Auto-Weapon + Asault Rifles + Medium AT Weapon (AT-4)).

Table Top Games has/had a large number of TO&E and weapon charts done by Bruce Rea-Taylor which included both the CHALLENGER stats and the WRG50-1985 stats.

Played both sets for about 10-15 years using 1/285 models and counters for the infantry units.

WRG rules are fairly nice. They were the first rules I ever played and did so for about 5 years. The only problem I had with these rules is they used a D6. So the best weapons always needed a 2+ to hit. But, lo when new weapon systems came out the old weapons that once needed a 2+ to hit now weren't that good anymore and it was the new ones that needed the 2+. So all the games we had with the old system were suspect. And so the story goes for each new generation of weapons got to be the 2+ system and the older ones were relegated to the 3 or 4 to hit junk yard.
