Because a definition of insanity is to do the same thing again, and expect a different result, I took the Greeks out again against the Romans.

I would have commented on the red thread of fate, but it was white. What the heck man? Also was that a LADG approved power cord in the background? A mighty clash that will be told in oratories for centuries to come.

Yes, that cord curls uncontrollably when cold. Like a 8' phone cord that inexplicably knots to 2' long. The games run long enough that the battery runs down on the phone, so it is a necessary evil.

I'm not going to remove all my hobby related debris from the view, so I might as well joke about it.

In the latest AAR, not yet published, I have a for sale sign on my v3 LADG book, lightly used and practically cheap!

Do you think ADLG is too hard on spearmen as a class of troops? From what you describe they really don't stand a chance, even formed up deep, yet they were a mainstay of many ancient armies. Certainly the Romans had to fight hard battles against armies with lots of spearmen in the early Republic (Carthaginians, Italiot Greek cities, Etruscans etc. I wonder if the rules have the balance wrong.

Cheers,
John

In my limited experience, it's not that spearmen are weak in ADLG – the game is well balanced.

More that you need to ask questions of the opponent. If you don't have a mix of troop types – and all spear – then you don't ask enough questions and it's easy for the enemy to pay to their strengths.

In this battle report, the learning highlight is about the cost of included commanders. It's a 3 point saving to include a commander in ADLG (e.g. in a 200 point game, 3 points is a levy or half a LC).

But the real cost is that you risk not having the command points to move your troops – which can really hurt mid-late game – especially with a large army that breaks up.

And something not mentioned is including a commander that gets into melee quickly means you basically lose any ability to rally off other units' cohesion losses (it costs double and your meagre pips are going to get spent on movement).

ADLG questions are best asked on the FB group where there is a very active international group (disclaimer: I wish it was easier to come here for discussions but it's just not :( )
