Hi all. On Friday we played out my latest revision of March Attack (Redux). The scenario is a slight adaption of the sample scenario in the original rules – Advance to Plancenoit, 18 June 1815. Things played out well and my changes worked as intended.
More here: link Summary of main changes to original rules: - Turn sequence updated to reflect newer rules. - Skirmishing – this was originally an abstracted phase that involves maths and was boring and did not, in my opinion, reflect the point of skirmishing. Now the skirmishing can be seen and each commander must make decisions on how many skirmishers to commit and for how long. This can be a wasteful drain on resources and achieve nothing (as quoted by an Austrian General) or be a real PITA if left unchecked. - Base sizes have been halved to allow for more realistic formations and skirmishing options. - Cavalry and artillery bases have been doubled to better reflect actual frontages – and it looks better… - Added rally points for retiring units. Broken units have predetermined areas to rally and officers would run around gathering collections of troops to the rally point. - Using historical formations and benefits from using those formations. They were used for a reason, but many rules ignore this and allow "wandering battalions" that all flit around doing their own thing. Some things I may have borrowed from other rules. Cheers, Mick |

Very nice looking game, both the figures and the table. I played many games with those rules, with some significant changes. Your changes seem to be very historic and well conceived. Tom |

Nice looking game! In 15mm you can really see those battalions and brigade formations clearly on your table. |

Like all the changes Mick, especially the skirmisher visuals/changes. |

Thanks guys. When I first tried March Attack a few years ago it felt like the main concepts were sound but there was room for refinement. I didn't revisit it until 2019 when I realised it ticked the boxes of what I wanted with a few modifications. I was careful not to break what worked as I went. |

I've always liked the look of a big March Attack game. It just seems to look right. Is there a link you can share to your house rules? I'm interested to see what you've come up with. |

>>- Using historical formations and benefits from using those formations. Not sure why columns followed by lines followed by columns is at all historical? But you do review yourself well… ;-) d |

@Tin Dictator – I haven't got a link but you can leave your email on the blog and I can send it to you. @SHaT1984 – Haha, I made that exact point to the commander of that division. Wargamers are the best fog of war because sometimes they just wanna do what they wanna do… |
