Why haven't the Egyptians tried to use high pressure water hoses to free the ship blocking the canal? They blew gaps that way in the sand ramparts lining the canal when they crossed it to start the 73 war. I would think this wouldn't be much different. |

It can be quite painful…… |

This ship, and its captain, we're involved in a similar incident in Germany a few years ago when it rammed a dock. They blamed a power failure and high winds. He deserves to keep his job, n'est-ce pas? It was doing 15 knots in an 8 knot zone. It's stuck real good. It's time to pass the hat and open a second channel. After they clear this one of course. Chinese will finance it. |

Those were sand ramparts, this looks like hard packed earth. Otherwise the massive ships going past year after year would have destroy the canal. |

Nice to see the high professional level of marine transportation personnel here… and no, I don't mean you Haze Grey types, either… Just saying. Eric |

ScoutJock I had the same thoughts |

If you jetted the banks the sand would go into the canal making it shallower around the ship. That is the exact opposite of what needs to be achieved. |

Unloading is going to be a job. Bring in the helicopters. |

Seems to be a bigger problem then I would think it should ? But for some reason it appears to be a lot harder to dig out, etc. ? Wish them luck … it could a real "cluster all the way around. I'm no sailor and the last time I was near a canal was in Panama, CZ in the early '80s with the US ARMY. |

The ship.jsnt just dug into the east bank, the forward third or so is also grounded, as the canal is quite a bit shallower on that side |

Saw that on the news today. They may have to look at doing something so this won't happen again. |

Just been on the news, the Suez canal is clear! Just a huge backlog to clear! |

The ship is being towed to the Great Bitter Lake (Isn't that a great descriptive name?) for "evaluation". I wonder if the Captain will be retiring soon "to spend more time with his family". I understand that there will be a lot of expensive repairs and dredging needed. Who will pay for it? Hopefully the shipping line. |
John the OFM | 29 Mar 2021 5:59 p.m. PST |
I think I detect a pronounced list. I think if Egypt seizes the ship once it gets to the Great Bitter Lake, that might pay for repairs. And a new channel. |
