Sad to see that Henry Darrow has passed away.
In the late 60's/early 70's, 'The High Chaparral' was a 'must watch' when I was young.
'Manolito Montoya' was a wonderful 'character' in the show… providing humour, along with 'shades of character', in his role.
From the obits, a gentleman, too.

As this is a Miniatures / Gaming board…
'The High Chaparral' would make an excellent platform for 'Western' games…
Defend the Ranch / Herd / Rescue Mission / Trip to Tucson… there was also an episode with a U.S Cav charge!

And the opponents…(although they got shot…a lot !)…also could have 'issues'…especially the Apaches… so, not just a 'shoot'em up' scenario. For those who might choose to, 2 players could involve 'goals'.. with 'possible'' peaceful resolution of stand-offs / negociations subject to 'wild cards' for 'Hot Heads', etc… 'just to allow some shootin' ! LOL!

Loads of possibilities…if you can find or convert suitable figs to your own requirements.

Anyway, Sad to see that Henry Darrow is 'another one gone'. RIP, Sir.

I very much enjoyed the High Chaparral. Excellent series. Remember the Airfix box of High Chaparral? Does anyone have a picture of the Manalito figure?

Yeah, the Old Airfix OO/HO set…rare and pricey, now!
Line up for top row:
Big John Cannon & Victoria, Mano, Buck, Blue. Rest were the standard 'Cowboys' set figs and very slightly smaller.
The 'character' sculpts were excellent for plastics in this size!

Sadly, the Airfix 'Indians', (apologies), were not Apaches.

Incidentally, though NOT 'High Chaparral', the old Airfix 1/32 Cowboys and US Cav figs were very good!
As a 17yr old (!), my 'long haired' mates… (with NO interest in games!)… came round once and we had great fun with a Western shoot-out, with 'shoe box' buildings! Lol.

One of my favorite childhood tv shows. I never missed an episode and of course bought the Airfix set. Sadly they had no Apaches to fight them.

Great actor. Great character. Watched this show as a young boy with my parents (who loved westerns). Manolito was my favorite character! RIP Henry Darrow.

Heedless Horseman, the episode with the cavalry charge was "the alliance" and it will filmed in the summer of 1969 at Old Tucson and down in Texas Canyon down near Benson Arizona. I was in a reenactment cavalry troop in Tucson that year and we furnished 15 of the 20 extras for the scenes involving the cavalry that took parts of two days to film.I went out to Old Tucson for the first day, hoping that one of the cav guys would not show up, but everyone did. I stayed to watch the filming the entire day. The "troops"rehersed the charge scene that would be shot the next day, then did the finale scene of the troop leaving the Cannon ranch.

I still watch it daily. It is on the Inspiration channel. I grew up in a very small town in West Texas (ranchlands) and couldn't understand how the guys on Bonanza never seemed to work. They were always home for dinner and clean as a whistle. The High Chaparral was evidently a working ranch and those guys got their hands dirty. RIP Henry Darrow who played my favorite character of all time.

Wargamer Blue, Thanks, that's the one! Those scenes were filmed in Texas Canyon, southeast of Tucson, about halfway between Benson and Willcox.
Btw, I was told that the lieutenant took a spill during one of the Charge shots ( which had to be reshot, of course.) While everyone else was riding McClellans, they had him on a flat, English-style saddle, one without a pommel. Guess they thought the officer should ride a different type of saddle.

Liked the show a lot. I think (as I think back) though, that it was edged out in my view by a better show, or a show i liked better, Cimarron Strip; even though it only ran one season. Of course… it COULD be I liked the show better because of the pouting "Dulcey Coopersmith" in Cimarron Strip!!!
