Unfortunately, too much of GoT, the TV series, has been influenced by Tolkien. The Good Guys are very hard pressed, almost on the point of collapse, when suddenly a deus ex machine appears. It could be the Eagles. Rohan. Frodo/Gollum getting The Ring into the fire. Lord Tywin last minute at King's Landing. The Knights of the Vale. Stannis. In many cases, there is true stupidity (Battle of the Bastards! Winterfell!) on the part of the Good Guys, but they're baled out by a Miracle. For this reason I propose Hardhome. No Miracle. No brilliant strategy. Just a very well photographed rout and debacle. At least it's "realistic". DESPAIR! |

I can't remember them all, but I do remember when Tywin's horse took a poop in the ante chamber to the throne room and thought that was pretty impressive. |

Hardly a battle scene, but straight from the book. |

Daenerys buying the Unsullied army and taking the city. The score during the end credits is a masterpiece. |

The Sword of the Morning and young Eddard Stark. A skirmish, not a battle, but the best sword work in the series. |

Well, sort of liked the battle at the wall as they tried to escape by sea from the nightwalkers. I also thought the Lannister Army's first encounter with a dragon was pretty good (I just hated the defrocked master that seemed to have an endless knowledge of anything that would counter the advantages of the good guys.) |

The dragon doing a strafing run. Burn baby burn. |

The big battle scenes was one of the weaker aspects of GOT. They were often illogical. Take the Dothraki charge against the army of the dead in the final season. They charge with their weapons magically lit on fire only to be completely wiped out. But they appear later in the season at what looks to be full strength. And from an earlier season, Stennis easily defeats the wildlings only to be defeated later by a single house of the North. GoT was interesting for plot twists, depths of characters, and from going against typical Hollywood formulas. |

Stannis lost a large part of his army when he burned his daughter. All his mercenaries left and his troops were demoralized. Nobody in Westeros knew to have any scouts out, or thought to have told their people to send word if a large army was traveling hundreds of miles toward their Capital. |

The destruction of Jamie's army by the dragons and Dothraki. First show of the bolt shooter in action against dragons that would have so much (idiotic) influence later. |

Yeah, the 'strafe'was amazing! By now, the CGI was really hitting it's stride to provide what was wanted! BUT, the writing was starting to disintegrate into the ridiculous! Jamie and Bron 'emerge' from the river about 1/2 a mile away from their 'dive'…in armour and leathers! lol! Etc. But,we still had Danaerys and Dragons… the 'real show stealers'… |

Having re-watched the whole series, (again!)… I am increasingly impressed with the production of the 'Battle of Winterfell' and the 'Fall of King's Landing'. Both are 'Epic'! The writing… still far too hurried.. and I loathe the series outcome… but… On 'Winterfell', I have no problems at all with the lighting. The stupidity of the 'tactics' is another matter… "You know nothing, John Snow!".. even after 'Hard Holme'! Building defences, then sitting OUTSIDE of them… and you could see 'The Crypt' coming, a mile off! The Dothraki charge… without co-ordinated airstrikes against command targets… well, I 'think' it was SNAFU… re 'Scot's Greys' at Waterloo or 'The Light Brigade'. .They DID show terrified, routed Dothraki returning, plus Jorah… and, also some Unsullied did retreat before the rearguard were sacrifices, A later discussion indicates that losses were about 'half'. Dragon combat was absolutely excellent… with the 'above cloud' scene, rather beautiful. The very'confused' combat within Winterfell, was well done and in keeping with the situation… they DID have to keep SOME characters alive… …and I have a better appreciation of 'the huntng' leading up to 'the Kill'. I still would have preferred the Very important outcome to have been 'spread' over two episodes… (maybe an evac / retreat?)… but… Overall, I like this episode more re-watching it. 'King's Landing'… well I may comment later. |
