Hi Guys, A few weeks back I posted a few pics of Battalion HQ bases (10-12mm figure-size) made up for playing the 'O' Group rules with (and these could be used for any WW2 game system to display a D6 orders dice on) -
Thinking I would want to make a number of these up for both temperate and winter game boards, I remembered that 1/144th scale supplier, Combat Group Dynamix, sells scenic diorama bases to display this size of models on. The three Micro-Diorama bases I decided to order have arrived (the most expensive one was $10 USD – these being the unpainted versions, and they're 3" x 3" square each). Shipping fee and time to arrive to the USA here was aok. -
I think they look really good in the raw, and are probably big enough as-is to mount a D6 die holder in one corner, and still leave enough room for a vehicle, or maybe figures of a 10-12mm command staff, etc. to be displayed also. I'm yet to decide if I'll extend my bases a bit larger with some putty, and the winter versions will need a texturing layer anyway, but I thought I'd pass this possible tip along. Here's the CGD website, and after selecting the Micro Diorama tab, these bases will be towards the bottom of the webpage (they're the unpainted ones, with some ones shown that I didn't order) – link Btw, see that base in the rt.-hand corner of the photo – it's got a blown bridge molded on it…..perfect as a German HQ base to use in Battle of the Bulge games! |

Thanks Advocate, and I'm happy to say these bases will be working fine! Here's a little progress report before I get them painted up – The bevel trim sides have been cut off and sanded flush on two of the bases. The one with the puttied-in dice socket will be a snow base, so the orders die will sit down into a snow drift…..also added some relief detailing to the barn and fence. The "Damned Engineers" – Bulge base, the one in the back is untouched yet.
Before these get a primer coat, I'll stick and cut magnet sheet underneath each, for storage/travelling retention (the magnet sheet will also help them from sliding around on the tabletop). |

It's a Dice Tray….
….or even a diorama base.

Those a lovely, but I think I'd try and find some dice that matched the colour palette of the base. |

Billy, thanks, and roger that! Here's the 2nd base, but with a subdued 'German-grey' die instead.

I skimmed through this and thought the King Tiger was at least brilliant in 20mm scale, or quite reasonable for 28mm. Then I saw the scale The camou net on the Stug is simply amazing. I am trying for that effect in 20mm, but without success. The snow effect with the track marks…I keep seeing rivets and bolts which I do not see in 1/72 models. Wow…. |

Thanks Liam! When the models have such nice raised detailing, dry brushing is a big part of the trick. Interestingly, it would probably be harder to use the same technique as completely on larger scale models, where the detailing is more spread out. That foliage camo does seem to work too, even at this scale – on that Jagdpanther. ;) |
