"Huh?" That was my first thought too. But apparently astronomy and telescopes have a long history with nefarious adversaries.

While the James Webb space telescope is finally completed and heading for its launch site in French Guiana (?) it will need heavy protection.

I won't ask "Why French Guiana?" I guess there's a good reason.

I also found it amusing that with the dozens of Boards on TMP I couldn't find the exact proper one to post this. I had to wing it.

Seems like the USN or RN could spare a destroyer or gunboat or something if it is this important

Sounds like an interesting modern Pulp Scenario

Space Pirates?

Cpt. Harlock in need of a new one?

Space Pirate Captain Harlock Trailer HD
I have chosen the japanese trailer.
I don't understand one word, but I love the accent.

There once was a german comedy sketch some 25 years ago in that Cpt. Picard and his away team explore Poland and park the Enterprise in Orbit.
The time they want to beam back, they have to realize somebody stole it.
A non-pc joke about Poland you won't find anymore on german TV.
Which is totally ridiculous, because the polish car thieves, valueing quality, of course prefered german noble cars over UPF vehicles.
Everybody knew that back then.

French Guiana has the French space launching facility and is closer to the equator, making it easier to send payloads to orbit.

You beat me to it Jim.

John – Most of the payloads launched from there are telecommunication satellites. Scientific satellites launch from all over depending on the orbit needed.

Thank you. I'm enlightened. grin

The modern paradigm of "share everything on social media" has made people forget about "security through obscurity".

I hope James Bond still around. Sounds just like something Dr. No might try to pull off.

Good one! or possibly Dr. Evil!

I wish I could find a video a friend sent me a few years back showing the new US man-pack anti-tank missile system and a French Milan in use with Canada, very funny.

Remember the photos of the Duchess of Cambridge when she and Prince William were first married? Your pirates could be in the pay of the tabloids. A telescope like this could put a lot of paparazzi out of business!

Well John, I am disappointed, you should know instinctively that space pirates require space telescopes, it's elementary Watson the OFM.
