What single element is the bane of wargamers?

* high prices
* Imprecise vague terminology
* cheaters
etc.

Lack of time for the hobby is probably the worst thing I experience. Not sure that would count as a bane, though. It's not intrinsic to the hobby, but is just part of life as a regular person.

McWong7311 Mar 2021 12:22 a.m. PST

Agreed, time

45thdiv11 Mar 2021 3:24 a.m. PST

Depression. Leaving you uninterested in any aspect of gaming.

Aye, the Black Dog. Its a mongrel.

The socially inept rules lawyer / power gamer.

Its kind of a malthusian trap.
Even if my time would be endless, the possibilities out there grow faster, probably quadratic.

For those who got the bug young – going from amble time but no funds (so frustrating!) to amble funds but limited time (so frustrating!).

Also known as "growing up".

Time. I will retire in nine years, but then I will have to contend with declining health! It is always something… Cheers!

Currently it's Covid. Otherwise it's the embarrassment of riches we have rules-wise. Too many choices, each gamer wants to play something different so you always feel like you're starting over.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP11 Mar 2021 8:43 a.m. PST

Lack of opponents, followed by time. But it varies between individuals and over time. Once it would have been money.

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP11 Mar 2021 8:58 a.m. PST

I'm going to blame autocorrect – of course I meant ample time and ample money. Rather than gently walking time and gently walking money !

But y'all knew what I meant wink

Time. I am retired and still time is the scarce resource.

Bashytubits11 Mar 2021 9:18 a.m. PST

Rules lawyers and poor sports.

My Bane is music. I like to listen to it while painting. Only problem is that when a good ol' dance song comes on, I have to "get up and boogie"! 3 or 4 hours later, it's time for dinner. Then either shoot spit wads at the CNN anchor or go to a Trump Anonymous meeting.
Life is hard…

Agree it's time available for hobbies is the greatest hurdle. It can come and go in waves.

I agree on lack of opponents, followed by sufficient space to set up a game. About all that's left is the pleasure of painting.

Lack of space
Lack of motivation
Depression

Chimpy11 Mar 2021 12:26 p.m. PST

I agree with all of the above but how about procrastination? I finally decided to do some Early Imperial Romans about 5 years after purchase. However the shield transfers had gone off so I had to buy some more.

Bandolier11 Mar 2021 12:47 p.m. PST

Lack of time.
Apathy/lack of motivation = wasted time.
Space is a real issue for me as collections grow.

John the OFM11 Mar 2021 1:05 p.m. PST

Lack of time and/or getting motivated to paint.

rmaker11 Mar 2021 1:12 p.m. PST

As stated above, lack of opponents, followed by time.

Players who are not ready to play on their turn.

I don't expect robot-like efficiency (unless my opponent is a robot), and certainly what someone else just did seconds before your turn can merit reconsideration of your options. Lapses happen, and I am willing to extend significant credit in assuming noble intent. But when you repeatedly start your turn with things you could have done in the off-turn (what's my objective? Where are my units? Whose dude is that? Can I look up a rule?, etc.) … grrrrrrrr …

Also, Bane.

Wives?

SpuriousMilius11 Mar 2021 2:36 p.m. PST

For me it's been the passage of time & the changes it brings. For many years, I fortunately had a gaming group of 8 who were close friends; we got to know each other's families, we dined, caroused, went to movies & wargaming cons together. Inevitably, some moved out of state, 3 died, & 1 is MIA. With the pandemic, the conventions & shops' game days that I attended the past few years have been suspended & so has my gaming.

John the OFM11 Mar 2021 2:45 p.m. PST

Wives?

Well, there's your problem right there. I only had one at a time.

Anal painting habits

Easily solved. I hold my brush in my hand. For one thing, better visibility.

ancientsgamer11 Mar 2021 3:19 p.m. PST

Funny how having kids also takes up your time. Plus taking care of elderly parents. Things were so much simpler when I was being taken care of… lol Love miniatures but love being part of my kid's lives even more. Then eventually grandkids I suppose.

I just leave the relevant bits on horses in the undercoat black.

I've never owned a Galatian army, I guess that could be an issue.

I repeat, will the real game Bane please stand up?
We're gonna have a problem here…

I didn't ask Rob Zombie nor etotheipi, but they probably would or will like it.

Oh, yes, THIS is the project I want to do. This is the one where the painting will be fun and easy, the terrain will be spectacular, and every game will be so much fun.

No, it isn't the project I said that about 3 months ago…

You should try games involving jolly jack tars….small scale, exciting topic, plenty of jolly seapersons.

Or buy figures that are clothed in the….anal region. Even Conan has a loincloth…..

ChrisBrantley12 Mar 2021 11:20 a.m. PST

For the aging gamer, having to worry about what to do with my collection when I'm gone so it doesn't burden my survivors, which also serves to discourage me from buying new things, investing in new periods, etc.

You mean a butt flap? They don't work well on windy days. Butt (sic), on the up side, you can really get the feel of the wind blowing through your hair!!

rustymusket13 Mar 2021 4:54 a.m. PST

Time and money, I guess. Time to paint. Money to buy more armies to paint. I want them all, when I see beautifully painted armies.

Finding the Perfect Rules. I have purchased endless sets and only recently have been able to stop myself from grabbing every new Napoleonic set that appears. It seems the Holy Grail may not exist.

The guys that never paint anything substantial for the games, and then criticizes others for "their incorrect painting!!"
