… in Nazi Germany "Film director Amma Asante found by chance an old photograph taken in Nazi Germany of a black girl in a school. Standing among his white classmates, who are looking directly at the camera, he enigmatically shifts his gaze to the side. Curiosity about photography – who was the girl and what she was doing in Germany – made the award-winning filmmaker embark on a quest that led her to Where hands touch ("Where hands touch", 2018), a new film starring Amandla Stenberg and George MacKay…" OT

Ah yes, interesting topic. Funny thing is, they probably escaped a sure final solution just because after the usual pre steps of genocide, that means discrimination, isolation, sterilisation, they where that small a number and so far down the societal bottom, the burocratic killing machine could'nt be bothered to make a plan what to do. It had more important things in mind and nobody gave an order. I guess it was something like this: One of the less important guys at the Wannsee conference to Otto Hoffmann: "There is a minor question about the those Rhineland bastards, the French left back in '19." Otto: "Where is the question? We will round'em up! Beside, that's not my business. I have to clean the east. Jews, Commies, the whole she-bang, ya know? And you also know what that means for my career, so spare me. … Dont' know, ask Heydrich. He ist teaming up with Eichmann." Minor Nazi minion asks Heydrich the same question. Heydrich: "Ah, yes I see. Well I will talk to Adolf… Adolf Eichmann I mean, little pun you know. He makes the plan, I just execute it… But until then proceed with the ususal preparations." Shortly after Heydrich forgot about it, Eichmann never made a note in his spreadsheet and voila, those poor souls were stuck somewhere in limbo just a few steps from the pits of hell. And survived it as walking dead on call. Lucky bastards. Allthough some would say, luck is a relative matter. … Just in case somebody should be interested, it is not difficult to find and read about them on Wikipedia. And did you know we had a 'Free Arabian Legion' back than to annoy those perfidious Albions? Free Arabian Legion on Wikipedia Ah ze evil Dschermans! There you go, some colorfull scenarios waiting. Indiana Jones style. And just because of a link. |

Not sure she (not "he") is looking at something different, many appear to be looking to their left of the camera. Her head is turned more to her right than the others which is why her eyes are at a different angle in her head. Not much of an enigma… |

Not much to do with miniature war games, but I found it kinda this article interesting from a history point of view. And it clears up some questions like the clip below: YouTube link |

I have always found this forum very tolerant of my work as a modeller, whether Free French Armour, Napoleonics or Vietnam Marines. Little to do with wargaming in practice. It is probably no harm to have our horizons expanded occasionally and many may find this of curiosity and interest. Or you could agree with my current reckoning of an 80/20 split currently, between treasures and absolute nonsense in his postings. That is much better than my much earlier 40/60 spilt and, even then, I thought the 40% justified the rest. |

Yes I find the "Free Arab Legion" in the German Army a very interesting topic. The same occurred in the CBI with Indian Army units that became IIRC the Indian National Army as part of the IJFs. In both cases I think they wanted to get away from British colonial rule, and become independent states, etc. |

Vikings are a popular modelling subject; discussing their appearance is not as much of a red herring. |

Legion 4, there were no Indian Army units which became the 'Indian National Army', only individual prisoners and deserters who were formed into units by the Japanese. They certainly were opposed to ending British colonial rule, but appear not to have thought through very clearly the implications of substituting that for Japanese colonial rule, which was undoubtedly the intention of Japan had they been victorious. The INA was at the very maximum including conscripted non-Indians (Burmese, Malays and others) about 40-50,000 strong. The real Indian Army had no conscription, only volunteer service. At 2.5 Million, it was the largest all volunteer force in history. |

This is the way I thought I read about it before, etc. link Even in a wargame about Imphal-Kohima I played had 3 or so INA Rgts allied with the IJFs. And yes, I thought many of them were POWs of the Japanese who "turned". The Germans did a similar thing with Indians they captured in North Africa. link |
BobGrognard | 19 Mar 2021 9:36 p.m. PST |
The Japanese had a particularly brutal approach the Indian prisoners of war: Join the INA or we will kill you. It is impossible to compare the tiny INA with the huge and very effective Indian Army that flight with the allies. |

That is very true and I was not alluding to anything else. The Indian Army in WWII preformed very well, etc., in all theaters. |
