I just received an email from Warlord Games. Hold on, I can mention this! They're a huge TMP advertiser! grin

Anyway, it seems there is a large project coming out at the end of April. "Mythical America".
It features extremely buff Native Americans, like they worked out at the gym 24/7. Well, ok.
So far I see Mohawks with clubs. Mohawks with tomahawks. Aztec Eagle Knights. Zombies?
But the price is $40 USD for 10 28mm figures. Note that the Mohawks have no bows, or muskets. Yet.
I don't understand this at all. Why are they competing with the excellent Conquest range they manufacture and at an obscene price level?
Will this be a new gaming system, Mohawk 40K?

Is there a Link? A link would be most helpful here.

I don't get it either. I think the genre is interesting but, since it is fantasy, they are charging fantasy prices. I am not sure I can do that, but I may talk myself into it eventually.

It is part of their Warlords of Erehwon stable, so it has specific rules and, I imagine, its own audience.

Tom, here you go:

John the OFM03 Mar 2021 1:39 p.m. PST

Ah. So they do have bows.
A system whose figures I might be interested in buying, if it were not for the price.
But the rules and universe? Please. I stopped doing that in the 70s.

79th PA has it exactly right – fantasy figs for a fantasy gaming system; so you can buy the fantasy native warband ($57 CAD) for 10 figs or go to their Black Powder historical lines and get 10 figs for $46 USD CAD

I am reminded of H.L. Mencken

SpuriousMilius03 Mar 2021 2:47 p.m. PST

I use the excellent Pulp Figures Woodland Indians as Skraelings vs my Foundry Vikings in a convention scenario based on the purported Norse visit to Heavener Oklahoma. I could use some more Skraeling figs. I could have the Aesir battle the fantasy Skraeling heros & creatures!

Or you can buy very nice Old Glory figs, at 30 figs for $38 USD,

Grelber03 Mar 2021 3:22 p.m. PST

One of the links in the discussion of bikini armor several days ago included pictures of North American Indians in wooden armor. I had hoped these would be included in Warlord Games' new sets, but, Alas! they are not. I might actually spring for a package of them to join my Saga Skraeling army.

By the way, why are the melee warriors all Mohawks while the archers are Seneca?

Welcome to franchise gaming. Stand by for the rules which may only be played with copyrighted dice.

I am reminded of P. T. Barnum. But I think the rate has picked up since his time.

Personal logo aegiscg47 Supporting Member of TMP03 Mar 2021 5:53 p.m. PST

A Wendigo monster and three Sasquatches will only set you back a mere $136 USD! Was this a niche that gamers were crying out for?

John the OFM03 Mar 2021 6:42 p.m. PST

Ah, the old GW ploy of charging by the "points value". Some suckers fall for it too.

I never heard of a 15mm Napoleon selling for $50. USD

Bashytubits03 Mar 2021 9:00 p.m. PST

They are thinking the younger crowd will go "cool" and spend oodles of cash.

John the OFM03 Mar 2021 9:37 p.m. PST

No! The heck you say!

Lucius04 Mar 2021 5:05 a.m. PST

You guys are kind of missing the point. People aren't buying them because they are too stupid to find cheaper figures, or too lazy to look for other options. They are buying them to have fun.

Warlord makes it easy to for them to have fun. They make inclusive off-the-shelf modules of fun. If you are complaining about the price, then you are not their target audience.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP04 Mar 2021 8:21 a.m. PST

"inclusive modules of fun."

Lucius, my Newspeak is a little rusty, but in standard English, having rules and castings which can only be used with each other and for which one source is the only supplier is a condition we call "exclusive."

And all previous experience with franchise rules and figures is that you're not buying fun, but renting it. In three to five years, you'll have to buy new rules--and new castings to match the new army lists. That's if you're lucky. If you buy the next Crimson Skies, Starship Trooper, Tekumel, Castle Falkenstein, any of the previous Judge Dredds or so forth, they just pull the plug on your fun machine.

The first H&R 5mm castings came out of the molds about 50 years ago, but my H&R Napoleonics marched and fought last Tuesday.

John the OFM04 Mar 2021 10:10 a.m. PST

Darn right I'm not the target audience.
When I broke into D&D back in the 70s, we used ordinary knight figures, peasant archers and slingers, plastic ant eaters, slimy monsters from vending machines, etc.
are you saying we didn't have fun?
Or are you saying that "kids today have to have it handed to them on a platter!"

Come to think of it, when I was a kid, we used cowboys, dinosaurs, army men, fire trucks…

John the OFM04 Mar 2021 10:15 a.m. PST

By the way, I play Flames of War, 3rd Ed. I have absolutely no interest in touching 4th. 4th made all my command stands irrelevant, de-emphasized infantry, and other abominations. Not to mention abandoning Guadalcanal, Philippines 1941 or 1944-5, which we deceived ourselves into thinking was on the horizon.

Dollars to donuts, the 2nd Ed of this Mythical Whatnot game will make half the super expensive "troops" obsolete.

KSmyth04 Mar 2021 10:55 a.m. PST

Yeah, normally I just shake my head at Warlord's latest whatever. The figures are nice, but I have a gigantic problem subsidizing a rule new system in a new figure scale that is only manufactured by the purveyor of said system.

I've purchased figures from Warlord before. They do some great work and provided super service but Cruel Seas and the like are not going to get my money.

rvandusen Supporting Member of TMP04 Mar 2021 12:25 p.m. PST

Next they'll be selling school glue and little bags of sand trade-marked "WARLORD!"

Camcleod04 Mar 2021 12:37 p.m. PST

This is hilarious.
From the Aztec blurb : "marshalling the power of death itself to conquer the Mythic Americas. "

Another range I won't bother with.

John the OFM04 Mar 2021 2:53 p.m. PST

Naismith Design make lovely Eagle Knights, by the way. grin

Bashytubits04 Mar 2021 3:52 p.m. PST

I have seen Naismith Design and they are nice, but unless you know something I don't they aren't currently available. One of the things I have really wanted to build is an Aztec army and I have been scouring the internet to find good figures. The assault group is probably who I will end up going with.

Col Durnford04 Mar 2021 7:21 p.m. PST

Have you looked at Wargames Foundry or Eureka?

Bashytubits04 Mar 2021 10:41 p.m. PST

I have looked at them, I probably will pick up some of the Eureka as well. I just wished I knew if the Outpost miniatures are close enough size wise for Tlaxcallan opponents.

dantheman05 Mar 2021 7:03 a.m. PST

The figures look a lot like the Flint and Feather figures. Buff Indians with spears, bows, and some wood armor. Flint and Feather claims they are pre-Colombian. Champlain did document some Indians dressed this way, but it was short lived once bullets flew.

I got a bunch of painted Flint and Feather figures when I bought a Woodlands Indian collection. I am keeping the 18th century figures but may sell the Eureka Aligonquin figures and the Flint and Feather sets. With this rule set there may actually be interest in them.

altfritz05 Mar 2021 11:46 a.m. PST

Warlords is selling Tekumel? News to me!

altfritz05 Mar 2021 12:01 p.m. PST

Instead of buying Warlord's junk, why not look at Paymaster Games? paymastergames.com

Lucius05 Mar 2021 12:14 p.m. PST

Robert P, I used the word inclusive to mean that people in the target market can just grab the game and play, instead of spending time agonizing over the price of each figure, and then spend more time agonizing over which "best" rules to use.

As far as exclusivity is concerned, I missed the part where Warlord shows up at your doorstep for a no-knock raid, to make sure everything is copacetic.

Warlord sells fun in a box, to a target market that does not consist of cheapskate, crabby older guys. For some reason that sends people round the bend.

John the OFM05 Mar 2021 2:21 p.m. PST

Speaking for cheapskate crabby guys, I also think the figures are too buff. Not at all like Magua's band of Hurons in LOTM.

How did a thread about Aztecs degenerate into a munchkin thread? Hey John, you didn't answer me, do you know how to get Naismith Aztecs?

John the OFM07 Mar 2021 10:32 p.m. PST

Well, back in 1997…
