I once had a referee check the deviation of an AP round that had just hit a tank. Just like indirect HP, only he checked for left or right deviation. Seem reasonable?

I'm thinking he either got confused with indirect HP, or maybe he suspected the shooter of deliberately targeting a command tank and wanted to mitigate the 200-ft general effect. Or maybe its a valid concept…

I thought it was odd.

Er….isn't this built in to the To Hit rules? Seems overly redundant to essentially recheck To Hit after it's already been determined that the round hit.

If it's one of *those* games, I can see having some kind of deviation check after a miss – the shell goes somewhere after all.

Otherwise sounds like a mistake.

It might have been "Easy 8" – that is a set of rules, yes?

There is Battleground World War II by Easy Eight. In those rules, once you get a hit you roll a D20 for location using the specific vehicle chart and target aspect. Perhaps that is what he was rolling for?
