Gorby … great call, but was he really a communist? I nominate Tito (Josip Broz) … such a great partisan leader, pretty much all the allies favoured him in WW2, despite his communist credentials. And his post-war leadership is an interesting discussion. Easily not the worst of his generation of dictators. Phil |

Ask blacks, American Indians, Chinese, Indians, Irish… victims of thousands of wars, big and small. The vast majority of the victims – a payment for profit. Even now, most wars are fought over economic interests. Capitalism is bathed in blood. |

Because of the nature of my research, when I was in grad school, I worked under two mentors and one of them was a communist. I liked him. By the way, my other mentor was educated by Dominicans and refused to attend mass after Vatican II. I liked him as well. Anytime I had to meet with my two mentors at the same time, their interaction would become fairly heated. It was like watching a replay of the Spanish Civil War. In addition, although I could never bring myself to vote for him and disagree with him on most issues, I admit that I have a bit of a soft spot for Bernie Sanders. Does that count? In fact, while I voted for Donald Trump (and would do so again), I would rather hang out with Bernie Sanders (but I wouldn't vote for him). |

Another vote for Gorbachev. He had the courage to tear down that wall. Che was a spoiled little rich kid from who turned into a murderous thug. When I see his image being praised on a T-shirt it sickens me. |

There was an old* Steve Allen show on PBS where various people from all periods of time would debate issues at a table (Steve's wife always potrayed the woman). One time the actor who played Wo Fat** on Hawaii 5-0 played Genghis Kahn. I loved it When he yelled "This planet is drenched in blood!" People have killed each other for lots of reasons ever since since an 'ape' touched the monolith:) *obviously ** I think it was Wo Fat P.S. Trotsky, ala Terry Jones and Ilia Kurakin. |

August Willich. One of the leaders of the left faction of the Communist League, Willich was forced to leave Germany after the failure of the Revolutions of 1848-1849 (during which time Friedrich Engels served as his aide-de-camp). Ending up in Cincinnati in 1861, he joined up with the 9th Ohio, rising to the rank of Major. He then became Colonel of the 32nd Indiana and after the Battle of Shiloh was promoted to Brigadier General of Volunteers in July 1862. Willich commanded the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, XX Corps until he was wounded at the Battle of Resaca in May of 1864. He served out the war in various administrative posts until again promoted to Major General of US Volunteers before returning to civilian life late 1865. Marx himself wrote of him: "In the Civil War in North America, Willich showed that he is more than a visionary". |

Bob Reed, son of Texan sharecroppers who fought in Spain with the Mackenzie-Papineau BN, XV BDE. Left the party after deciding he was missing too many good fishing days. Others include Adolph "Buster" Ross who put together the first definitive list of American volunteers and raised money for my work building a database of American volunteers, and Saully Wellman who served as the Battalion Commissar of the Mackenzie-Papineau BN, he was a tough guy in WWII he was on leave in Paris when his parachute unit was sent to Bastogne. He was literally poured into a foxhole. He was wounded and captured by the Germans, but crawled off into a ditch to escape. I spent time working in his personal library. They were products of their time, I got to know them and had a lot of respect for them. You might not like their politics (not my cup of tea) but you have to admire the courage of their convictions. |

None…communism is responsible for the death of millions, yet they're given a pass. Communism and Nationalist Socialism are two sides of the same coin. You might as well ask, "who is your favorite NAZI?" |

And how many people have the capitalists killed in 500 years of their existence? Capitalism is an economic system, not a political system. Communism is a political and economic system which requires and DELIBERATELY murdered millions in the name of the revolution. Communists should no longer get a pass on what they did in just the last century. |
