"In the United States, one question seems to dominate big-box and "Mom & Pop" stores across much of the nation- "Where the Hell is all the ammo?"

As America reels from uncertainty and unrest, the number of firearms flying off the shelves continues to pile up- there just doesn't seem to be enough munitions for all of them.

Is the government buying it all to keep it out of the hands of its "citizens"?

I remember a few years ago a government agency bought almost all the .40 cal ammo that was available. I sold a bunch of boxes at double my cost at the time as you could not get .40 cal ammo for love or money.

Homeland Security was the department, it was 2013.

Oddball…yeps….that was back in the days when the Fez was starting and I brought it up. One person on this site kept telling me it was "For training", and I responded with, "You don't use HP's for training due to the cost, you use ball rounds." The USG agencies made massive purchases of ammo to the point of almost taking out all civilian production, this was also to include the Department of Agriculture and The USPS…

You also have to take into consideration the shortages involved with components to make ammo; Powder, primers, bullets and brass. Any hold up in those also causes shortages. Also trained personnel to make ammo. And expansion considerations, do they want to or can they afford to expand? what happens when the shortage stops? Lots of logistics involved.

Ammo is out there, getting bought up as fast as they make it. As well maybe a million new firearms sold and they want to get some for testing and come for future.
Went to indoor ranged in January, they had lots of ammo but could only get the caliber you brought to the range.

Oh, my god, all of us are suddenly rushing out to buy toilet paper and there's none on the shelves! It must be a government conspiracy to buy up all of the toilet paper!

Primers: mostly made in China, harder to import these days.

Brass: more expensive now than ever, mostly produced overseas.

Bullets: Lead. No more U.S. lead mines. See above.

Powder: still produced in the US, but many more people reloading now than before, due to ammo shortages.

7 million plus new gun owners who want ammo.

Gun owners who are scared of new regulations and are stockpiling.

Add all of these up and you get scarcity, not really surprising.

Yep, 7 million, and yes the government conspiracy stories are true, since the government did buy up far more than they'd ever need a few years back.

Also, some even advocate that each bullet casing have a serial number scribed on it in order to further increase the costs and reduce the ability of people to exercise their 2nd Amendment, Constitutional Rights.

On top of that, they want to institute expensive permits and licensing, and mandatory insurance coverage to own guns, which is the unconstitutional equivalent of a "poll tax" for voters.

For the record too, IIRC, hollow point bullets are outlawed by the Geneva Convention when used for combat in wars, so clearly stockpiling them for military use is verboten.

Maybe the CIA needs the ammo for all of their proxy armies and militias they sponsor overseas. No, of course not, they'd never do that, would they?

That massive purchase by the US government was a smart move on their part. Every goat-herder conspiracy theorist had it down a a dark plot, but somebody much smarter decided to not screw around and get what they needed when it was available.
My local store had a collection of pictures of people banned from buying ammunition because they bought everything on the shelves. All I wanted was a few boxes of .22 and was lucky to get it!
