This is the Battle of San Jacinto – the field is two Cigar Box terrain mats forming a 6 by 9 playing surface. Ignore the squares. I cut out terrain from other mats to form the field. The troops are still being mounted on magnetic stands. The Texians are from the Alamo line by Old Glory .. the Mexicans are from Bob Duncan's collection which I acquired some years ago.
There should be perhaps 500 figures in this bucket-of-dice game for as many players who can fit round the table. -- maybe 6 to 8. The diorama photos are from a museum in Texas. We will try to playtest this sometime time and have it ready for Nashcon in August.
Here are some of the flavor rules to get you in the mood.
Random Events. Each turn the initiative player casts a die. A 1 is a random event. Then cast another die. Each can only occur once.

1 Erasmus Deaf Smith attempts to blow Vince's bridge and halt further reinforcements. Each turn Smith attempts to blow the bridge. A 1 on first turn succeeds. A1 or 2 on second turn succeeds. A 1, 2, or 3 on third turn succeeds. After that Smith is discovered and captured and a unit of Mexicans appear on the road.
Colonel Sherman
2 Colonel Sherman's premature attack – The cavalry attack prematurely. A 1 or 2, cast 1 die for casualties – may save. A 6, they are covered in glory: enemy cavalry unit cast 1 die for casualties – may save.

3 Mexican Artillery fire. Houston is wounded

4 Lucky Shot – A Texican regimental commander is killed. A replacement appears but each unit under the commander's command draws 2 moral chits.

5 General Cos takes the field and can issue 1 army command per turn.

6 Secretary of War, Thomas Jefferson Rusk takes the field if Houston is killed or wounded and can issue 1 army command per turn

Santa Anna's Luck.
Santa Anna had a nasty disposition and a world-class ego. When he became president of Mexico in 1833 he said, "Were I made God, I should wish to be something more." He was also very lucky. If "killed" during the game, he has just hidden in the grass and is later captured at the end of the game. Toss a die: A 1 he is later killed by his own men, a 2 is killed by Texicans. A 3,4, or 5 treats with Houston for political concessions. A 6, escapes again!

Victory Conditions.

Houston has got to win to survive. To prevail he must cause the Mexicans to lose 10 units either through retreat off the field or via loss via combat or fire. This is reduced to 6 units if no Mexican unit is adjacent to the barricade.

Very nice. The mats look great and are practical but I would have to put some 3-D trees on them.

Nice!
It always amazes me just how truly small that battlefield actually was.

Thanks .. Absolutely – when we play for real we will fill the forest with trees – this was just for show and tell. Come up here and help me set them out.. I know which side you want !

Great ideas, and an excellent battle for a scenario. Someone posting on TMP, quite awhile ago, stated his opinion that the Texas War for Independence was not a good period to game, for some reason or another. I think the reasoning was that the battles were generally smallish, and were often mere skirmishes. Sounds like the perfect period to game for me! Colorful uniforms on soldiers from one side, eccentric uniforms on militia and adventurers on the other. The Grass Fight, the storming of Bexar, Coleto Creek, the storming of the Alamo, the Battle of Goliad; all sound like gameable battles to me. They are not even forgone conclusions, if players have more tactical skill than the people they are portraying. I like the Grass Fight, since the basic scenario can be played in any era, just switch out your mode of transport and what the transport is, or is not carrying.
