I know that new rules are being developed based on the Pike and Shot Society's rules for Marlborough and now Frederick. Anyone here an update on timing?

Surely very soon? After all, I don't think there's been a new Napoleonics set for weeks.

If you are familiar with the "Twilight " set of rules, you know these will be unique and worth the effort.

Bound to be, Barcah. They all are, after all. Also realistic, fast-playing, easy to learn and exciting.

Cynical? ME??

Do we really need another set of rules?

Steamingdave215 Feb 2021 4:00 a.m. PST

I don't think the "Twilight of the Emperor" is anywhere near ready. Covid has played havoc with the author's plans for play-testing. There has been discussion on the Twilight FB page and on the Twilight io group.
As for whether we need another Napoleonic set, good question. Twilight does have a unique mechanism, making it ideal for big games. It should certainly play faster than other "army level" games based on the brigade as a unit, such as AoE, Naps battles etc.

In all seriousness Legionarius and Steamingdave2, I wish I knew the answer. My ideological response is always "let a thousand flowers bloom" and hoping for progress. (If it's just fashion, why bother?) But the more we each cling to specific sets (and often specific required basing) as the One True Rule Set with dozens to choose from, the harder it is to find an opponent and get a game in. We mostly have other reasons for the graying of the hobby, and we may be right to have them, but it's also true that the hobby grew in the days of a lot fewer choices.

No, I don't know the answer. I've just given up on the idea that adding another set of rules will turn things around.

The hobby grew when there were fewer choices. Ugh. What were the basing requirements for Empire again? I hate rebasing.

Why not just do a house rules set based on the 7yw set? link

Robert Piepenbrink – I agree with your comment that any new rule set for any period will turn things around.
