…Creator of John Wick

"Game of Thrones has ended but the fantasy TV genre it so elevated remains. A new Lord of the Rings show is coming. A Game of Thrones prequel show is coming. The Witcher is a hit. And now, just as Paramount is developing a Dungeons & Dragons movie starring Chris Pine, writer Derek Kolstad is simultaneously working on a potential series based on the franchise.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Kolstad is "developing a pitch" for a D&D series. That means things are very, very early on in the process. Maybe it'll happen, maybe it won't, but it's in the works nonetheless. Beyond that, "multiple writers" are reportedly working on other D&D projects in addition so even if Kolstad's show doesn't come to be, another one might…"

They'll screw it up with stupid cutesy characters or WOKE nonsense.

From the article: " Throw some mythical creatures in the mix and boom: D&D."

What does that even mean? Is it a show about people playing D&D? Or is it a fantasy story? If it's a fantasy story, what does that have to do with the rpg D&D? There are any number of good fantasy novels that could be made into movies. Why the D&D reference? Is this just typical Hollywood hype over the latest garbage?

One of the best fantasy movies to come from Hollywood was "Dragon Slayer", circa 1980s.

I have 0% faith in the project.

"We have to be careful with this franchise, its not like there are hundreds of books or any other source material to work with."
I can still hear that idiotic line from the producer of the current Star Wars movies.
So Hollywood doesn't have a great track record.

I think there's a Harry Potter series in development too.

D&D has a very rich setting history, with a number of settings to choose from: Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms, Ebberon, Dark Sun, Dragonlance, etc.

I personally think a 3-season show adapting the Dragonlance Chronicles would be a pretty awesome thing. Then do a sequel for Legends.

Damon.

Back when the OFM was a drunken woman chaser, we played the white box D&D.
No stinking pretty picture scenario or "world" books. Our GMs had to make up their own worlds, and we played in them.
Kids today. Ptui!

Hollywood will completely throw under the bus the so-called "Advanced" D&D. Rest assured.
The end result will be unrecognizable.
Abandon all optimism, ye who hope for a good "film".
Don't you remember what "they" did in 2000?

Maybe a miniseries treatment of Andre Norton's book 'Quag Keep'?

I remember reading the first three Dragonlance books as a kid. So it was much more than just a campaign setting. So any D&D tv series is really not based on the game. It is based on a novel which is based on the game. But I agree, a show based on Dragonlance could be good.

If we have learned anything, it's that Horrywood/television doesn't care. It's all about dollar signs.
They probably paid "someone" for the rights to use "Dungeons and Dragons", and will then put on the usual garbage.
It will tank. Then the line will be that viewers don't tune into "quality" fantasy, so we're going to see more shows like Detroit Emergency Room, Philadelphia Police, Denver District Attorney, Seattle Chef.

Tango0105 Feb 2021 12:40 p.m. PST

Sadly true….
