Do you have any big box stores or craft stores near you? There are lots of green and brown shades of craft paint for not a lot of money. |

I use Americana matt Sable Brown then dry brush with Americana Hauser Medium green and then Hauser Light Green on my bases. Americana matt acrylic paints are cheap and obtained at nearest Michaels craft store along with a few other brands. |

I use craft paint for bases as well…color/shade depending on the army I'm basing – dark muddy browns for Dark Ages, light tans for Middle-eastern armies, etc. If I'm going to texture the base, I typically paint and drybrush the texture with some combination of colors ranging from brown, tan or grey (going dark to light from base coast to dry brush). And if I'm in the mood, I might even hit it with a dark wash (made out of Burnt Sienna craft paint or Citadel Agrax Earthshade if I'm feeling rich). If the base will be flocked only, I either base coat in a brown or green (ranging from your standard craft hunter green, to Americana's medium green, Delta Ceramcoat's Christmas or Green Isle, Folk Art's Leaf Green or Fresh Cut Grass, or Anitas Spring Green. The brighter the army's paint job…the brighter the grass shade, which can always be toned down with small stones, tufts, and other base scatter. Obviously there is no single right way or perfect paint shade…I just try to find some combination that looks right for the army and its geographic setting. More info than you asked for, I know. As for availability in Canada, all the aforementioned brands are available through Amazon if not in your local craft store. Michaels usually carries at least 2-3 of the brands. |

I paint my bases for temperate areas, like Western Europe and the eastern US, with Folk Art Olive Green. Other colors are used for arid climes (if you want to do Valverde, in New Mexico, 1862, for example). Once I paint the bases, I flock them, or cover them with sand. Grelber |

I paint my bases with house paint. I buy sample pottles from the hardware store. Water it down a bit and Bob's your uncle. |

I have tried lots of different things, but always come back to Delta Ceramcoat Autumn Brown for bases, which I can't get at the local Walmart or Michael's anymore (arrgghh!). Highlighted with a bit of sand or beige, and you're off to the races. |
