"A tool is only as useful as the person who uses it, and when it comes to military small arms a weapon is only as deadly as the shooter who fires it. Give the most refined marksmen rifle to an untrained individual and it won't turn that person into a sniper.

While it will always be the shooter, not the firearm that scores the kills, some rifles have become legendary for how their trained users were able to make such impressive shots…"

There are no dangerous sniper rifles, just dangerous snipers

I used to do gun safety and marksmanship for kids with an emphasis on safety and respect for weapons. I always used the term "weapon" and not gun or firearm.

Anyhow, this one kid at 5 years old took an interest and we continued to coach him. In high school, he made the California Junior AR-15 team and they were national champions at Camp Perry. I got him competing with me in CMP matches with the M1 Garand and the kid eventually started outshooting me. He told me he was going to join the Marines and I took him out to the 600-yard range for a day firing the M1 Garand open sights, the next day he left for Boot Camp.

I talked to him after his enlistment and he said one day he was on a rooftop in Yemen doing communication support (he was not a Grunt or sniper) and they called for a sniper because they spotted some targets about 800 yards away. The sniper was engaged elsewhere so he said he sighted his standard nothing special M4 Carbine with an ACOG sight estimating the range at about 750 yards and a lead because the guy was walking at a 90 degrees deflection shot. He squeezed off the round not expecting a hit and a few seconds later the bad guy dropped. When they recovered him, the round had impacted in his armpit, an almost perfect but also lucky shot. Training pays off.

A weapon is only as good as the trooper using it.

Training, practice, and knowing your weapon. The new technology is pretty amazing and can make a novice and expert, under ideal conditions.

Quite some time back, i read an article about ww2 sniping.
The author presented some opinions on sniper kill claims.
He was rather doubtful about soviet claims and reckoned they were often inflated as propoganda.

One odd thing stuck in my brain.
He said a lot of british snipers stalked their targets to close range and preferred iron sights.
I don't know how accurate this claim was but i suppose if you're used to stalking in the highlands then maybe sneaking about in forest, long grass and hedges would seem easy.
I know sniper schools would have trained british snipers with scopes.

The SMLE is one of the most accurate and easy-to-use bolt action rifles. If you have the range estimated to within +/-10% you'll have a 90% chance of hitting a man-sized target out to 600 yards on the first shot. Iron sights also have an advantage because there are no glass optics to reflect and give away your position and keeps your profile lower too. You also don't have to worry about keeping it zeroed in too. Also, getting captured with a scoped rifle may mean immediate execution by the local troops.

I think the British sniper tradition comes from the Scottish Gillies (game wardens) where it was about stealth and getting close.

On Halloween when my son was in 5th grade his school let them attend wearing a Holloween costume to school. He wanted to go as a sniper wearing his Gillie suit but the school said no military theme costumes. He wore the suit anyhow and told the principal he's not a sniper, he a Scottish Game Warden. It worked.

LORDGHEE, nice video. It really shows shooting under combat conditions with a good crosswind and not adjusting the sights at each range. The 300-yard battlesight setting and practice will work well under combat conditions out to 400 yards or more.

I like the SMLE Rapid Fire too: YouTube link
