Silurian asked on a separate note, you don't know of any images of medieval Sudanese Ghulams do you? The closest I have are warrior saints from Nubia:
A Nubian Warrior Saint, Mural from the Cathedral in Faras, 8th-century. National Museum Warsaw
Archangel Michael, Nubia. Mural from the Cathedral in Faras, Sudan, Second half of the 10th century. Polish National Museum
St. Theodore Stratelites as a cavalryman, Coptic fresco, Church of ‛Abd Allāh Nirqi, Nubia, early 11th century. Sudan National Museum
Coptic fresco of St. Phiobammon as a cavalryman, Church of ‛Abd Allāh Nirqi, Nubia, early 11th century. Sudan National Museum
Parchment depicting warrior saints, Nubian, Qasr Ibrim, Egypt, 12th-13th centuries
