I'm looking at doing a connected-battle campaign for a Platoon to Company sized game. The idea is the New Company (B Coy, Duke Of Buckingham's Yeomanry*) starts at the start of the historical campaign, and fights a number of battles depending on what it is given to do.

Did consider France (D-Day+3 through to early '45), but now I am wondering would Italy be better for this size of game. It appears that the terrain would lend itself to "knife-fight in a telephone box" style battles.

Thoughts?

*Yes, it is fictional. Probably nicknamed the 'Dobbys' knowing British Army humour!

I have nothing for you other than it sounds like a great deal of fun.

You could do a narrower time frame where missions are only separated by days not weeks.

I'd look at D-Day/Breakout, Sicily so you can field Italians or something fanciful for Market Garden.

This sounds very much like the Too Fat Lardies campaigns for their platoon-level Chain of Command rules. They have several campaign pdfs available that give a series of linked games.

My brave boys of B Company, the South Essex have been doing much the same thing for last 20 years!

I went with Normandy and the breakout as a) the terrain is much easier and b) there are a greater range of personal accounts to plunder for scenario inspiration.

There is also always the trusty old Skirmish Campaigns Operation Epsom linked scenario book to fall back on as well.

I feel like bocage is also "knife-fight in a telephone box."

The reason I started looking at Italy is looking at the terrain on Street view, (and I would imagine a lot of it hasn't changed in 80 years) was how close it all is, and steep. There isn't the room for a Goodwood or an Epsom.

The bocage is mostly US sector. Once you start moving north into Picardy and Pas de Calais it gets very flat and open.
