… while binging Game of Thrones?
I'm starting on my 7th iteration. I shout for Robb, Jon and Sansa. Beer is involved.

A. Of course! Winter is coming!

B. Hell no. They are usurpers of Royal Authority. (Tory Loyalists)

C. What's Game of Thrones?

"The North Remembers" ……. especially applicable today in the UK!

Martin Rapier26 Jan 2021 1:57 a.m. PST

The North Remembers, and Winter is coming.

As we live in the North and are busy watching those southern Jessie's in Kings Landing moaning about a bit on snow, spending all the cash on railways we don't need and nicking our vaccine supplies, they all seem very apt.

Only read the books--and gave up on those when it became obvious that Martin would rather be a Celebrity than a writer, and wasn't interested in finishing them.

A writer being a lazy piece of sh*t can unfortunately still be someone who is able to enthrall me. So no matter how much this person disgusts me I will still read his following books about the game of thrones. That is, if they are ever coming forward…

Started watching my 6th run through in Nov. '20, finished the last episode last night. As klunky as the last season was, I still miss the series.

Read the first book only, So not a fan of series or Miniseries.

rustymusket26 Jan 2021 7:47 a.m. PST

I have heard of "Game of Thrones".

myxemail26 Jan 2021 8:00 a.m. PST

Nope. Mostly because I have not read the books, and I do not watch the TV

D. I have never watched/won't watch Game of Thrones.

I've read some of the books, but the gratuitous nature of much of it, along with Martin's constant rabbit trails away from the core story, finally made me give ‘em up. There's only so much this reader can take.

But when I watch or read The Lord of the Rings, I cheer for Rohan.

I thought that was the Percys.

Parzival – you prompted me to try to fit Lord of the Rings into the Game of Thrones mold. It would be quite different to say the least. Eomer would be sleeping with his sister Eowyn. The journey to Mordor would have taken much longer as Frodo and company would have to stop at every pleasure house between the Shire and Mordor (and there would be LOTS of these). Rivendell would resemble the Playboy mansion. Saruman would probably not change much at all. Gandalf would create green fire to destroy Mordor but end up using it on Minas Tirith instead. The ringwraiths would lead armies of undead zombies instead of Orcs. Aragorn and Arwen would ride dragons down from the North to battle them. Sauron would grow from the evil villain into a hero who dies a valiant death in the end. In the end the ring would be given to Gollum who had used it for centuries without ever attempting world domination. The fantasy worlds of today are much different than in Tolkien's day. Having said that I much prefer Tolkien's version.

Porthos, kind of the point. He and I are much of an age and a rotundity. Given his rate of output we're not likely to both be around for a concluding volume. I spend my reading time on something which has an ending.

No, but SWMBO has stopped saying, "Oh, come on, let's go … what's the worst thing that ever happened at a wedding?"

Haven't read the books. Fifteen years or so ago, I gave up on long fiction series. Popularity tends to be the only way a long series can be completed. With popularity, and funding, comes demands for deadlines and content to match popular opinion, both of which I find dilute the works. Eventually, they become parodies of themselves.

I don't believe this is true of every long fiction series. Redwall did not do this. The Wheel of Time did not (though I always considered that a cute little reboot of Moorcock).

In the show, I did not find the debauchery gratuitous. I'm sure a few times over eight seasons, I felt that at spots. Most often it was in service of the plot rather than plot being in service of presenting debauchery.

The eighth season sucked. I'm sure somewhere on the web there is a repository with more words that Martin has and ever will write explaining the myriad reasons why. For me, that means that the end of the seventh season is a jumping off point for gaming the milieu.

I enjoyed GoT, but have no particular desire to watch it again.
