""Your idea is stupid!"" Topic

Some comments on what constitutes a personal attack (which is against forum rules).

Let's say that you've posted something on the forum, and I think you're completely wrong. So I post:

Your idea is stupid!

That is a criticism, perhaps even an attack, on what you've written. It is not, however, a personal attack.

To make it a personal attack, I would have to post:

Your idea is stupid, and you are an ass!

That is now an attack on the poster, and not just a commentary on the post itself.

Personal attacks are against forum rules.

Being critical of other posts is allowed. Being grumpy, opinionated, having an attitude, being a crusty old guy or a know-it-all, and being sarcastic are not against forum rules.

Sigh.

Good point. But if people only ever took the sensible, government agency approved path, then we wouldn't have manned flight, automobiles or IPhones.

There's a difference between making a deliberate risk decision and being stupid.

Manned flight and the automobile were both developed in a deliberate and managed trial-and-error engineering process.

Apple was founded on criminal activity, so I'll give you that one. Coincidentally, Apple is the Big Brother of the IT world. It's OK for their founder to violate laws and steal from the public, but you better not touch their infrastructure.

"Your idea is stupid". Try saying that to your wife and telling her that isn't a personal attack.
